Raleigh Downtown Magazine’s 24 Most Influential People

image“Reviving a city’s downtown is not a task for the timid or the impatient.”  That is how the article starts which describes the 24 most influential individuals attempting to give Raleigh a 21st Century Downtown.  From the NC State College of Design’s Dean, the Presidents of Peace and St. Augustine Colleges, various developers and bankers, to the founder of the architecture firm Clearscapes, the list is quite inclusive of various professional trades.

The Raleigh Downtown Magazine stated that is takes vision, timing, constant communication and diplomacy to carry out the plans of a downtown organism and the individuals chosen for this list exceed these qualities.  “They are investors. They are leaders…..in bringing businesses and attractions back to Downtown Raleigh and then creating housing and space for the people and amenities that will follow, ensuring that Downtown will continue to prosper.”  The future of downtown has been in the hands of these 24 people and will continue to be over the next couple of “growing pain” years.  Downtown is prospering, businesses are finally deciding it’s okay to move in, and many who previously feared downtown are now seen riding rickshaws on the, not as crime laden as thought, streets.

The main criticism of the list is that there are too many development oriented individuals and not enough law makers or culture makers on it.  Where are the Charles Meekers on this list?  What about Artspace as a collective?  Weren’t they the first art galleries/studios downtown before there was a “new downtown”?

That said, if anything is a great advertisement for Downtown Raleigh it would be a billboard on every suburban highway with the faces of these individuals on it.  Thumbs up guys!

That’s a pretty sad list if you ask me. Mostly real eastate developers rather than the community developers that really make the difference. Try again.

Obviously, the owners of this new magazine were pandering to potential advertisers. Look at who ended up buying most of the ads… The few edu folks seem to have been included to appease folks who would think the list is all real estate-related.

Mostly the same old, same old.  Some of those folks haven’t had a new idea in 20 years.

I have yet to see the Raleigh Downtown magazine, but I have seen the Raleigh Downtowner magazine.  Are they the same thing?  I didn’t see this article in the most recent issue.

    Hi Fred,

Thanks for pointing that out. I can assure you that the Raleigh Downtowner has nothing to do with the Raleigh Downtown Magazine. In addition to their many article errors, mentions of businesses that have long since gone, and canned clipart photos, no one I’ve talked to has seen these magazine out around town (even though their own website listed a print run of 50,000 issues, 20,000 of which were distributed in “Restaurant, Museum and Entertainment Racks.” I help deliver our magazine and I’ve never once seen a Downtown Raleigh magazine rack.

We truly appreciate the support and loyalty that our readers have shown us since starting the Downtowner in November of 2005, and are looking forward to growing even more with downtown Raleigh. We’re proud of our history of being a big advocate of the area, and trying to help in any way we can.  Now that the online Raleigh Chronicle is part of our media family, we’ll be able to do an even better job. Along with all the great blogs in the area like newraleigh and others, we all have the ability to contribute to news, ideas, and to chronicle happens in our city (no pun intended).

Unfortunately, some publishers have come into this area from out of town with the sole intention of making a quick buck with little or no regard to quality, loyalty or respect for the people or businesses here.

We live and work in downtown Raleigh and are committed to doing our part in making it the best it can be.
