Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill Now One City

The Sporting News recently named Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill as the 24th Best Sports City in the nation. This is probably due more to UNC and Duke basketball programs than the Carolina Hurricanes, but hey, we’re all in the same city here. Raleigh edged Charlotte, who is listed at #35. But to be fair, Charlotte is actually one city.

Full list here.

In other sports news, a Bull Durham sequel is in the works, which will be filmed in Durham. Perhaps they’ll stop by Mitch’s Tavern on Hillsborough Street, where a scene from the original 1988 film was shot.

Charlotte is NOT one city!  If it were not for South Carolina, that stadium would be hal empty.  And noone shows up for the Bobcats games (alwasy empty seats in the lower bowl, even when a good team comes into play.

Canes (along with Carolina, Duke and State) are a huge reason we are in the top 25 cities, they have given Raleigh global visibiliy since winning the Cup and still today (I hear it from my global customers all the time).

I don’t think you can quite discount NC State athletics in this ranking either. 57k for a football game is not bad—especially when the team’s not very good. Add in the RailHawks and the SAS tourney, and you have a nice area for sports.

well, from Carrboro to Chapel Hill to Durham to to Morrisville to Cary to Apex to Garner to Raleigh to Wake Forest….etc etc.

We’re about to the point that our borders are indeed seemless, at the very least.

Funny but scarry at the same time. Out of towners already thing Raleigh-Durham is a city because we are often referred to by the name of the air port!!!

How is this a revelation. Before I moved here over ten years ago I always heard “Raleigh-Durham”. I seem to remember that maps even had it like that.
Also the Canes are a pretty good franchise for this area.
    WTF is up with Cary?

Too bad we can’t think regionally – as one geographic area - when it comes to transportation issues.

Once you get down to #15, you realize it’s a silly list.  I know KU is popular, but come on.

Most of the time when outsiders are saying Raleigh-Durham or any other combo, it has more to do with the Metropolitan Statistical Areas (i think that’s the correct name) that lump various combinations together for statistical use at a Federal level.

I contacted someone at some mass media outlet about it and they were quite adamant that saying Raleigh-Durham makes total sense because of the MSA.

They seemed much more interested in their rulebook than regional reality.

Yeah, well I’m glad to see that Morrisville, Cary, and Apex were left out of that blend.  I say the cities should unite against the suburbs…wait a second, that’s what election day is for!
