Raleigh Free Press Says Farewell

image
Raleigh Free Press was one of the many Raleigh blogs that have been doing a great job covering local news and culture. They were one of of the few that were mentioned in the recent News and Observer article pointing out all the new Raleigh blogs. Unfortunately, they are the first in this list to call it quits. In an online letter dated May 5th (yesterday), the editor, S. Beaumont (an avid reader of New Raleigh), stated that he would stop writing on Raleigh Free Press, “at least for the near future.”

Raleigh Free Press was one of the only blogs to offer an RSS News Feed of many other websites in the area. This is a very helpful tool for anyone who likes to browse various local headlines in one quick shot. Luckily, this is one of the things about RFP that will stay and according to Beaumont, “All the old posts will stay as well.” The posts had slowed down recently on RFP but it didn’t seem as though they would end completely.

Raleigh Free Press was a nicely organized site with a clean interface.  RFP, thanks for helping boost the Raleigh independent blogosphere. New Raleigh will miss you guys.

The lack of writing on this wall has likely served as the writing on the wall for this site, but for the sake of closure, I’m officially done writing on the Free Press — at least for the near future.

It’s been a blast. I appreciate the support of everyone who dropped by and particularly those who visited regularly and joined the conversation with your comments. Also, thanks to J. Chavis, C. Sherwood and W.R Davie for their stories and contributions.

I have no intention to take the site down, so if you scan the headlines on our News Feeds page, they’ll stay up. All of the old posts will stay as well.

Cheers!

S. Beaumont

Many thanks for the kind words. I am indeed and will remain avid NR reader, and I really hope that you guys are able to continue growing. I think you’re definitely on the right path with a strong group of writers and contributers and a clear mission and message.

For me, it was the time commitment. Too many irons in too many different fires and it eats me up to do anything half-assed. I’m really glad that several other sites, like NR, are still going strong and representing so well.
