In case you haven’t noticed, Raleigh citizens are freaking out this afternoon because gas stations around town are literally running dry.
Oil refineries in the Gulf Coast have been shut down in anticipation of Hurricane Ike. As a result, motorists are panicking and sucking up every drop of gasoline in the city. Many filling stations in town have already closed for the weekend. Several are still open, but lines are long, and gas is running out fast.
Here’s a tip for today’s Raleigh Gas Shortage: use a higher octane gasoline.
A friend went to fill up earlier today, and had to wait in line. Word got around the asphalt lot that the station was “out of gas.” People occupied the pumps for a few more minutes while the penny meter crept to a dead standstill. And then they left. Those who stuck around were able to fill up with mid-grade in just a couple of minutes.

Wouldn’t better tips be…
1) Don’t get gas unless you actually need to fill up instead of contributing to an artificial demand spike created by the media.
or…
2) Buy whatever is cheapest.
or…
3) Don’t take everything you hear seriously if someone claims the station is out. Ask the employees.
Just some thoughts.
Can’t someone go out there and tell them that a Category 1 hurricane isn’t going to cause the next apocolypse. Plus if gas runs out just syphon it from your neighbor.
Raleigh should implement a mandatory basic economics class for all residents. Immediately.
THANKS TO RESIDENTS [CONSUMERS] PANICKING, OUR SERVICE VEHICLES WILL NOT BE RUNNING THIS WEEKEND TO FIX THEIR HEATING/AC EQUIPMENT.
SO IF THEY’RE HOT BECAUSE OF BROKEN COOLING EQUIPMENT, THEY CAN JUST SUFFER UNTIL THE GAS THEY STOLE IS REPLENISHED AT THE PUMPS MONDAY OR TUESDAY.
CONSUMING AMERICANS HAVE BECOME SUCH VICTIMS,SUCH SELFISH PIGS, IT’S INCREDIBLE.
AND I MIGHT ADD, NOT JUST A LITTLE EMBARASSING!!
[AS AN AMERICAN CONTRACTOR MYSELF]

WATERCOLORS CONTRACTING CO, SOUTHPORT, NC
CLOSED FOR THE PANICK!!!WILL REOPEN WHEN AMERICANS GROW SOME _ALLS!
Not that anyone in Raleigh would be using a contractor out of Southport for HVAC services… but yeah, I get what you’re saying.
The news and media should be fined for causing fear and panic. I’m glad I didn’t fall for their trap/advertising. It looks like gas might be cheaper after Ike has hit.

Can anyone tell me if there are gas shortages in the area now (9/25) We are driving thru tomorrow from western NC and want to know what to expect.
Thanks
I hear Charlotte is and I had to leap frog a few gas stations in North Raleigh on Tuesday evening… I haven’t noticed otherwise.
