Last year Charlotte and Greensboro were fortunate to have new law schools open their doors inside their urban core. Charlotte School of Law and Elon University   are following a nationwide trend that aims to put law students closer to potential employers and vice versa. The benefit to both parties, as well as the means of attracting a young professional demographic to the city can not be more clear. Campbell’s law program currently has a class of approximately 350, and operates with a staff of about fifty.

According to the N & O, the Dean of the school, Leary Davis, said the idea had been on a long list of proposals for heightening the school’s presence. The writer of this entry has learned that the school was accepting several proposals and had been doing so with great intensity for the past year, before settling on 225 Hillsborough St (The building owned by Art Pope and which houses such ultra-conservative groups as N.C. Institute for Constitutional Law and Americans for Prosperity. Yeehaw!)

A local design firm provided proposals for other sites which included the old Wachovia Tower and the North Blount Street development area.

Frank Holding. Jr., President of First Citizen’s Bank, will oversee the fundraising operation for the renovation of the building to accommodate the school and the eventual move. After he’s done with that maybe Holding can work on setting up the bank’s headquarters downtown, instead of Smithfield (boo hiss).

The relocated law school hopes to be in full operation by 2009.
