Raleigh Proposed Central Transportation Hub

Exciting news for our growing downtown as the city considers a Grand Central station.  The station would house the city/TTA bus station, the Greyhound Station, and the Amtrak station.  While the more affluent members of our audience may not have experienced public transit here in Raleigh, rest assured, there is much improvement needed.  The centralization of these three stations would make transfers easier and give guests a much easier time in deciphering our transit system. HDR Architecture, Inc. will

be designing and planning the station, in doing so they will

deliver a feasibility study, drawings and a development strategy for property in the area.  The plan will be delivered early next summer.

The planned location of Boylan Heights could cause controversy- the north side of Boylan bridge is the tentative location. It does seem that this area would have less impact than appropriate areas nearby.

The 2000 Census counted around 3,300 people in the downtown; the expectation in 2010 is to reach 10,000.  Meeker has underscored the importance in a Grand Central station to support this population. The residents wouldn’t be the only group to benefit- but tourism as well.  In conjunction with an intelligent light rail design- one could imagine the city hosting national conferences at the new convention center- and our city’s guests completely relying on public transport to come into the city and then enjoy it’s amenities.

There is some push back by folk considering the funding of the project, but if we are willing to give 80 million to make Kane Realty rich, then an investment in modernizing our transit should be easily justified.

if they moved it to the other side of Hargett there would be plenty of room. If I recall there’s not a whole lot there. Just before the Boylan St bridge and further down Hargett toward’s downtown?

Well, nothing is set in stone and that marker just means in that general area, it may be on the side where sidetrack brewery or whatever.

It would make sense that it is down the hill from Moonlight and those two houses on Boylan (which I think are on the historic register) next to the tracks.  For a station of this magnitude, it may be on both sides of the tracks:

This is a strategic location that is centrally located, yet on the fringe of downtown.  (And right around the corner from the proposed TTA Regional Rail headquarters, if that ever happens.)

yeah, in the design/plan my firm did for the new TTA station at this location, it was a bit more south, knocking out Five Star and all of Dillon Supply Co. (hence why they moved) and hence the writing of this article in the latest INDY

So what’s the official status of the Regional Rail anyway?

As it happens I am a member of the Special Transit Advisory Commission which has been meeting with the goal of making recommendations to the two metropolitan planning organizations by the end of October.  The last meeting was July 18th, the next will be Tuesday July 31st.  A lot of raw information has been produced in the last two weeks, which we are still digesting.  All input is welcome.
