Pitchfork is reporting that Raleigh’s own Annuals signing with sony. Recently Raleigh has had a rash of good local bands as exemplified by previous posts. Annuals return home on October 27th to perform at Cat’s Cradle.

For a Raleigh band, Annuals haven’t appeared too much in this area since their record dropped. They migrate to Chapel Hill, but its probably the booking agents preference and not the bands. Who know. In lieu of the news, I ask anyone reading this comment field to check out why signing/being affiliated with a label isn’t all roses and cake.

fucking brilliant article Vince. oh what a tangled web we weave…
“college radio turds”... sigh… truer words…
annuals: good luck with the big dogs….
They just played a show at Raleigh Music Hall a week or two ago with Future Islands and Lonnie Walker as Sedona…their alter-personality
“Sedona…their alter-personality” is not Annuals. Thanks.
I would like to say that as a musician, one of the things that pisses me off is when a band does that. “Alter-personalities” or the idea to form another band with members of your currently active band is kind of like dating someone and saying it is okay to see other people in the process. You take away the idea of your initial band when other music projects get in the way. You’re robbing one band of being unique and special.
If the material is of a different style than your current band, fuck it. Have some balls and bring it to the band. If they do not like it, its not the end of the world. Put it on the back burner. You may need it to bail you out. Especially in the case of Annuals. Keep any “alter-personality” material handy in case one has to get out of a contract by adhearing to its stipulations, such as number of albums required of them in said contract. They just signed a deal with a label whose parent company is Sony and confidence does not seem to be 100% there. This is from their News section on their website:
“At the risk of repeating myself - I would like to remind our surprisingly loyal readers that tickets for our upcoming tour are now on sale to the public. If you have any intention of coming to see us and help us feel better about the direction our lives are taking - please get your tickets ahead of time!”
I’m sure you can read between the lines here. Or maybe they are being cynical about it. Shit, young kids like being cynical. Old ones, even more so.
indie band is afraid of being labeled mainstream. thats what i read.
but i guess they knew what they were getting into before they signed the contract. made their bed, etc.
Vince,
I am sure that artist everywhere appreciate you telling them how to “have some balls” while you preach from a internet blog.
Maybe next time you see them around town you can give them this advice in person instead of angrily ranting anonymously on a blog.
Dizz,
Your fantasy of my state of mind is not apt. I’m not “angry”. Sure, I used some adult language and the phrase “pisses me off”, but rest assured, I’m not going to waste anymore energy. Yes, at times I probably don’t exercise the best tact. I am guilty of this, like anyone else, including you. Also, Dizz, (if that is your real name) my real name is Vince. How am I, as you put it, “ranting anonymously” about anything if I let people know who I am?
My guess is, Dizz, that you are a obviously a fan or a member of Annuals/Sedona. Consider yourself vindicated. Please go champion someone else. Thanks.
Hey there, Vince!
I guess you should read up on your Annuals. Sedona came first, fuckwad. Your article, which you wrote with quite a condifent undertone, was a terrible ode to your mid life crisis. Its too bad you arent in a band, I hear Sedona is looking for a band member, or is it Annuals?
Dear Vince,
1. Sedona came before annuals, you stupid fuck.
2. Sedona only stopped playing and producing because of the success of annuals.
3. Sedona is a COMPLETELY different band than annuals and if you knew one thing about what the hell you are talking about, you would understand that.
Vince, your ignorance astounds me, to have the audacity to make such sweeping conclusions about the “record business” and target your mindless insight on a local honest-to-goodness Indie rock band.
Sounds to me like your just a little jealous of Annuals…whats the name of your twat band?
-e
oops typo…
Vince, your ignorance astounds me, to have the audacity to make such sweeping conclusions about the ?record business? and target your mindless insight on a local honest-to-goodness Indie rock band. *MAKES ME ABSOLUTELY SICKENED!!!*
For the readers, “Not Vince” and “Not Vince two” are coming from the same place. Also, Vince, Not Vince, whoever Vince, Dizzy, & OJ try to keep it civil. This is music.
If you truly value the music then drop the dogma.
touche!
Thank you David and everyone else who has shown some maturity on their comment. I thank you and appreciate it sincerely.
I hold no value or validity to any of these anonymous, demeaning comments against me on this post. I would rather take your word for it, face to face.
Yes. We should meet face to face, if you’re so inclined, my anonymous friend. I feel that you may not be completely finished with what you have to say. I feel that you’ve misunderstood me. I would like the opportunity to give a full understanding as to why I said what I said. The internet is not the place for this type of discussion. What we need is somewhere public, a place with an audience. A place with a mediator.
Thank you.
