Just as Goodnight Raleigh is a photography based site that highlights the variable activities and buildings of Downtown Raleigh, there is another local photo site that is worth a peek. RaleighSkyline.com has been around since 2004 and frequently posts very dramatic photos of the ever changing Downtown Raleigh skyline.
Matt Robinson is the main contributor to the site and he seems to capture photos of downtown that are quite mind boggling. He has been photographing Raleigh since 2000, after coming to NC State in 1999. RaleighSkyline was launched in 2004 as Matt stated that he started it as a “repository for photographs and in somewhat of a response to my other website, PittsburghSkyline.com. The Pittsburgh website came to be in 2002 with similar intentions, with photos I collect when I visit back home.”
He often lists the camera he uses, starting with a Fuji FinePix 6900Zoom in 2004 to now with a 21.1 Megapixel Canon EOS 1Ds Mark III. But, as in most cases with art, it isn’t the tool that makes a quality product, but the hand (or eye in this case). Matt has an eye and passion for being in the right place at the right time to photograph our city. Matt also stated that “Photography has grown to become my primary source of income, which is nice, since I like the subject of skylines and taking pictures of them (a basic formula, I admit)” Sometimes basic formulas are the key to success.
From events like Raleigh Wide Open to Barack Obama in downtown, Matt and his camera are there. He is well known for his night shots and new ones were posted this week. A couple of weeks ago, there was a storm in downtown that produced a good bit of lightning. Matt was there to document it but there was something missing. Last night, the final piece of the puzzle was put into place and Matt go what he wanted from a storm over downtown. I commented to a coworker as the storm rolled in that I was sure Matt was out and about. Sure enough, more photos surfaced this morning, these being some of the best so far. The photos show a skyline with lots of shine and potential with the storm echoing doomsday scenarios overhead.
Here’s a tip of the hat to Matt Robinson for continuing to photograph our New Raleigh as it continues to build and grow from the downtown out. When all the dust settles from the construction in years to come, RaleighSkyline will be a true documentation of urban progress.
