Raleigh, The Hardest State Capital to Remember?

I read a quote the other day in a Wired article that stated that “Google has organized our memory and real-time search is organizing our consciousness.” Our lives are now organized by cloud computing and it’s not surprising that a list of the hardest state capitals to remember has popped up. Guess who is number 1? Yup according “searches on Yahoo! in the past week”, it seems that North Carolina’s capital city of Raleigh slips the mind of the internet surfers the most.

I wonder why? Is is that more folks are moving to North Carolina and looking to settle down in the capital city? Does it have to do with government jobs? Any other ideas?

Ten Hardest State Capitals to Remember:

  1. Capital of North Carolina
  2. Capital of California
  3. Capital of Alaska
  4. Capital of Maryland
  5. Capital of Georgia
  6. Capital of Florida
  7. Capital of Montana
  8. Capital of New Mexico
  9. Capital of New York
  10. Capital of Washington

And if you forgot any of the above ones or other 40, here’s the full list. Hat tip to Raleigh Philosophical Society for the find.

According to the 500,000 people that have taken the state capitals quiz at Sporcle Raleigh is nowhere near the hardest to remember. It actually ranks 18th, with 72.4% of people getting it right.

I think that list is probably very skewed, as the article suggests, by the fact that Raleigh has recently been written up in several media outlets about how it is the best or one of the best places to move for work.

    See Forbes article below:

    1. Charlotte is twice the size, has NBA and NFL teams, and is(was) a big banking city

    2. blame it on Rand McNally

    3. people get confused because they think RaleighDurham is a city

    4. the only NC city people on the west coast know is (surprisingly) Asheville

    5. UNC is in Chapel Hill

So this is based on recent searhes on Yahoo.  I would think based on a random survey, the hardest capitals to remember would be Illinois, Maine, Missouri, Montana, Michigan, Nevada, Minnesota, and Washington, and a few of those mentioned in the Yahoo search.

People likely don’t even bother to search for many of the lesser-known ones.

And c’mon, everyone in America knows that Raleigh is where Barney went to party!
