Raleigh: The Sober City

Another Top 5 list, this time the mostest with the soberest. Raleigh tied Fayetteville, NC for fifth on USNews and World Report’s Most Sober Metro Areas list with 97.2% of the population not drinking heavily. With all the new bars and breweries opening in our area, this must mean we know how, as a city, to drink responsibly. But, whoever performed this survey obviously doesn’t frequent Raleigh Downtown Live rock-a-thons or Jackpot!

Three towns in North Carolina finished in the top 5 and the rest of the top 10 were mostly Midwest states where there’s lots of oats and barley.

In a related case of events, three NC cities ranked on the Smokiest and one on the most smoke-free. Man, people in Hickory smoke a lot and don’t drink very much. Not sure of an accurate explanation, but that’s an odd statistic.

Tip from Dana at gogo.

said it before, i’ll say it again. that place needs to be bulldozed. no where else in raleigh can you be vomiting heavily in a corner and no one notice nor care (for days).

OK, *really* US News??? Really??? This is the kind of reporting you’ve resorted to? As a fan of good journalism, I should read the actual US News article to see how they came up with such statistics. However, given the ridiculousness of the whole thing, I refuse.

I just don’t understand how any study could truly capture these percentages. It truly makes no real sense…

Then again, I could read the actual article…

PS: where does one get the “sobriety is no accident” beer cup??? It looks like a ball park, from the blurred background. Surely it’s not at the Durham Bulls stadium…

there are way too many fans for that to be a minor league park.  prob just a stock photo.

  • kg06/16 07:51 AM

maybe it is due to all of the cops downtown.

  • richardfoc06/16 09:35 AM

The cup is from Comerica Park in Detroit.

  • MMI06/16 02:00 PM

Bingo.  If you read the cup backwards, you can see the Comerica Park logo on the reverse.

    Oh, and WOOHOO CHARLESTON!!  smile

  • mgd06/24 01:39 AM

    Isnt Hickory a dry county?

And how do they count the sale of alcohol on military bases?

  • GB06/24 08:51 AM

Nah, Hickory’s not dry, it just sucks.

    There’s a difference.
