Raleigh’s New Public Safety Center to be Designed by Signature Architect

imageCity officials issued an RFQ on Wednesday for a new $100M, fifteen story building which would function contain administrative offices for the city’s police and fire departments.  The city will select a local architecture firm, who will likely serve as the architect of record for the project, and subsequently select a nationally recognized firm to serve as the lead designer for the city’s new office building.  This is an exciting opportunity for Raleigh to gain a significant architectural work, and an important show of initiative for the city.

This news reminds us of other forthcoming projects in Raleigh that have potential to gain national recognition.  Some of which include the Contemporary Art Museum (Pugh+Scarpa with local firm Clearscapes,) the North Carolina Museum of Art (Thomas Phifer and Peter Walker with local firm PBC+L,) and the second tower to be built downtown by developer Ted Reynolds, which is being designed by Michael Arad, winner of the World Trade Center Memorial Competition.

I just read in the Triangle Business Journal that the city doesn’t have a plan as of yet how to pay for it. They tried partnering with the state, but will probably opt for a Certificate of Participation…the pseudo-bond option that doesn’t have to go before a city-wide vote.
