Ralph Nader Raleigh Rally Saturday

The presidential candidates are making their rounds through North Carolina as the November election gets closer. Obama has made his share of appearances at rallies and local bars in Raleigh, Ralph Nader will hold a rally this Saturday, John McCain has yet to be spotted in the triangle, and where’s Mr. Bob Barr?

Independent presidential candidate Ralph Nader will appear at press conference on Saturday July 12 at 7:00 PM at Saint Mary’s School (Pittman Auditorium) at 900 Hillsborough Street. A rally will follow at 7:30pm. He will address local and national issues. A contribution of $10/$5 students is suggested. Ralph Nader stated on ABC’s This Week with George Stephanopoulos last week that he hopes to be on over 4045 state ballots. We can only assume that North Carolina will be one of those, which could be one of the reasons that former North Carolina governor Jim Hunt recently stated that North Carolina could go blue this year.

(Update)Nader will not be on the ballot in North Carolina due to restrictive ballot access laws, but he is hoping to gather enough signatures to have write-in votes counted. Therefore, it looks like this is simply an issues rally.  Nader will visit all 50 states before the election and hopes to be invited to the Google debate in September.

Freedom of choice is a good thing.

The next step is getting these non-Republicrat candidates like Barr and Nader a spot at the table alongside of their major party opponents so voters can take the alternatives seriously.

Ugh...great.  He might as well just hand the election to McCain.

RaleighBob - McCain has Barr stealing conservative & libertarian votes from him.

I think that Barr and Nader are treated with sufficient seriousness already.

Nader did have his chance, several times, and never really demonstrated himself to be executive material.

Barr, on the other hand, was once a very powerful legislator, and had he stayed in the GOP it is conceivable that he could have been on the GOP ticket for President.  He’s got the credentials to hang in the same sphere of experience as McCain, and is certainly more qualified than Obama in terms of experience.

A bit sad that people can’t seem to think outside the sphere of the two-party system. Do the existing candidates sufficiently cover enough of your interests to hand over your vote to them? Maybe that speaks for you, but I relish the thought of being able to have other choices. I’m all for Nader being on, even if it is only as a write-in. Be nice to see someone with conviction on there, for a change.

I’ve always felt blaming Nader for Bush winning was a complete cop-out.  Nader has always seemed to me as the ONLY non-phony candidate.  If he would have given in, he would have been adhering to the very thing he stood against, supporting the lesser of two evils.

Ofcourse, when one of his main stances is political reform, particularly in the electoral process, it’s obvious that the powers that be will fight him ever getting equal attention as a candidate.

It’s just too bad the average voter is so uninformed, they need CBS/FOX/whoever to tell them who the best candidate is.  If they wanted to give them equal treatment, they’d let them in the televised debates.

As for demonstrating himself to be of “executive material”, that bar hasn’t been set too high by most of our past/present leaders, so I’d have to disagree.
