According to the News and Observer, Rapid Fitness will move from Glenwood South to the Warehouse District. Rapid Fitness moved into the old Capitol Fitness/Peak Fitness space back in 2009. The N&O states that the building is being sold by Greg Hatem and the gym will close at the end of May. They will relocate to the building that houses Buckhead Saloon and most recently Club Raleigh Live on Morgan Street beside Vintage 21. This is will be great day and night activity for the Warehouse District, something that it needs greatly. The renovations are scheduled to last three months. Lots of activity over in the Warehouse District this year which is great to see.

Rapid Fitness members are being accomadated for in the time frame of the move. More details on that over at the N&O.

According to Rapid, the location is far from a done deal and the time frame for reopening is 90-120 days.  The warehouse location poses serious parking problems.  From what I can tell there are only pay lots in that area.

Yeah, the parking in that area sucks. If I had to park a couple of blocks away and walk to the gym to work out, I would be SO pissed. /s

I’m not sure who owns the parking around that building but there is actually a ton of it.  Look at that block on goolemaps, 60% of it is parking.  I am sure a deal can be worked out, as those lots are not always full most of the day.

They really should have started on this new space as soon as possible and narrow the time gap between when the old one closes and the new one opens.  Having access to their other two locations in the meantime is a pain in the butt when you consider how far up in North Raleigh they are.  They risk losing some members to Seaboard for sure.

Thank you RaleighRob! My thoughts (and my potenial actions) exactly. And I’ve been going to that location (From Capital, to Peak, to Rapid) for years! Maybe time to check out the Y or Seaboard…

It doesn’t seem like the best move for Rapid Fitness, but rent might have gotten too high at the Glenwood South location.  I am guessing they figure that they will continue to draw on the Glenwood South residential group as well as now Park Devereux, Dawson, and The Hue, etc. in the warehouse district, as well as development and condos downtown.  The good part about this is that it leaves a great space open in the Glenwood area for potential retail space (perfect for an Urban Outfitters although I know thats a long shot)and it helps the warehouse district out and saves us in the area from another terrible failed club/ultra lounge experience.

About 7 miles away and on the bus route is “far up in North Raleigh”?

Downtown Raleigh in general poses serious parking problems.

“Downtown Raleigh in general poses serious parking problems.”

People who say this must not have much experience with city life.  Raleigh has an absolute TON of parking decks, they are free on nights and weekends, and parking fees are minimal the rest of the time.  This mentality leads to the never ending strip mall construction we’ve all become so familiar with around these parts.

If you can’t find a place to park in downtown Raleigh, you aren’t trying very hard.

    What about Powerhouse? Go big!

Raleigh does have a ton of parking decks, none in the warehouse district.  Most are free on nights and weekends, but not for long.  The good news is that charging for parking will free up lots of spaces, because people will go elsewhere.

You should have been more specific.  In your earlier post you said “Downtown Raleigh in general” and not “in the warehouse district”.

In general, there is a ton of parking in downtown Raleigh.

There are 5 or more parking decks over 4 stories tall. People who say there is no parking downtown are just too lazy to look! You cannot park right in front of every place you want to go! And people who complain about walking a block or two to go work out- get real- walking a few blocks would be a great warm up and cool down.

While the Warehouse District doesn’t have much in good decks, it does tend to have more street parking opportunities than Glen South.  There are also some private lots near there that maybe the gym will work out a deal with.

    Maybe they’ll offer valet.

  • Lisa Jeffries

They had valet at their old location, so as long as they keep it up, parking won’t be a problem. I for one am thrilled to see something that has the potential to last longer than two years going into this space! And I’m happy to bear with Rapid during this time. I’m not driving to North Raleigh to go to the gym, but they happily put my membership charges on hold until the new facility is ready.

^Lisa, what are you doing in the meantime?  Anyone offering temporary memberships?

  • C
    05/23 02:13 PM

They’re giving members the right to use the N Raleigh & Glenwood ave gyms & adding 3 free months to their contracts.  New location is closer to home, but I will miss the old building.

O2 Fitness has month to month memberships available at it’s Seaboard Station location! Local company, 10 locations and each membership comes with 2 free personal training sessions!

  • Eileen Eulich
    05/26 02:27 PM

O2 as an alternative = enrollment fee + processing fee + $39/month.  You would end up spending around $70/month if you stayed for the 3 month period Rapid would be closed.

Ms. Eulich, O2 is actually offering $1 enrollment for Rapid members displaced by the closing.  We look forward to serving the community and thier fitness needs!

I called O2 and they offered no discount on the signup fee for month to month memberships, which is what people who already have Rapid memberships would be interested in.

Rapid Fitness has taken down all information related to the new downtown location from their website and the space they claimed to be opening in August is still for lease…..
