RBC Sensitive to Wachovia’s Pain, Base Jump Canceled

Damn, just when you thought downtown could get a little nutty. The base jump scheduled today to open RBC plaza has been canceled.  RBC felt that base jumpers would be just too much fun in the face of other bank’s new antacid addiction. The N&O quoted RBC PR “Given the recent market activities, we just didn’t think it was an appropriate time to have people jumping off of a bank building.” and followed up with “We wanted to be very respectful of our financial partners and Wachovia”—a name emblazoned on another Fayetteville Street tower.”  Well guys, you may be a bit down in the dumps, sad for your finance homies, if you will, but the rest of us are stoked about that big tower opening, so how about a parachute or two?  Wachovia won’t care.  Promise.

Yeah really, I mean… there’s a lot of crappy stuff going on in the industry but the building is still opening… so why not celebrate?

I would have done it for free.

Maybe you also missed it, but the press release from RBC specifically said,“please don’t make a big deal that we’ve cancelled it.. we’re just doing this out of courtesy for the hard times and our friends.”

Maybe you missed it, but we print what we want to.

Should banks that are wise, prudent and smart not to invest in risky mortgages actually apologize to those who did?  I mean c’mon.  Many of the financial corporations that are failing right now did it to themselves.  Those that didn’t should instead be proud of themselves.

Similarly, the State Employees Credit Union website lately is very much actively boasting that they are secure because they act safely and responsibly and haven’t done anything risky.  And I say Bravo…you should be proud of that.
Therefore, if RBC is in a similar situation they should be proud too.

I also posted on this today.  I realize why they have canceled the jump but it really was the big draw.  The grand opening is today but the building will be there the next day and the day after that.  Base jumpers from the Red Bull team would have been a blast!

I wonder why RBC wants a bunch of energy drink junkies promoting their new building anyhow?  I’m sure they could find some experienced jumpers who’d volunteer to jump it, like at Bridge Day in WV.  It’d be neat to see an event like that in Raleigh.
