As we know well in Raleigh, Chapel Hill and Carrboro have proven to be fertile ground in local music over the years. Here’s a quick look at what several bands there are up to (other than the sold-out Mergefest XX gang): North Elementary has some recent alt-pop releases including a 7” cover of Pistolero’s “Endless Summer” which mastermind John Harrison was/is giving out! See what you think of “Golden Tigers” from the new album ‘Not For Everyone, Just For You.’

Also, The Kingsbury Manx have put out their long-awaited fifth full-length entitled ‘Ascenseur Ouvert!’ on the keyboardist’s own ‘Odessa Records.’ Melodic mellowness has become the Manx’s signature method of operation, and they have a new video for the more upbeat “Well, Whatever” you can check out.
On the heavier side of town, Black Skies’ 2008 ‘Hexagon’ EP (now out on limited edition vinyl) and Caltrop’s full-length ‘World Class’ (also put out last year) are now available for download from Pig Zen Space for $3.50 apiece! Give a listen to Caltrop’s epic “Bloodroot” and Black Skies’ grungy “Nomad,” made available by the bands to New Raleigh readers. Both groups will be joining Raleigh’s Colossus at the Pour House Wednesday May 27.
