As mentioned a couple of weeks ago, Remedy Diner opened its doors today (Monday) for lunch. In Q&A fashion, a couple of our writers answer the question: How was your first experience at Remedy?
Jedidiah
Remedy Diner feels like it has been a Raleigh staple for years, even though it just opened today. The ingredients are simple yet tasty, the interior is unpretentious yet stylish, and the atmosphere is laid back yet urban. The Spicy Turkey Sandwich is one of the better deli sandwiches I’ve had downtown. With a fully stocked bar and Stone IPA/Blue Moon on tap, Remedy will become a staple very quickly. Also, the Dunnies are a great playful touch around the interior. Sometimes it’s the subtle details that make the most difference. The All-Day Breakfast was tempting, but I like the fact that they could be now known as the any day hungover brunch spot in downtown. Any day is the new Sunday.

With a cast of familiar faces, the seasoned staff of Remedy Diner handled their first lunch service in style today. The cozy space was comfortably crowded with a steady stream of customers, but the staff seemed well-prepared. Scott Williams could be seen in the kitchen smoothly expediting orders while his girlfriend and co-owner, Angie Holder, tended to the front of the house. I tried the Big Boy, a hoagie roll with generous portions of roast beef and turkey with swiss and cheddar cheese, banana peppers, red onions, romaine lettuce, tomato, mustard, and horseradish sauce. Served in a familiar basket, the quality sandwich could have been from one of my favorite Raleigh staples, Sadlack’s. My only notes for improvement would be tossing in a nice pickle with the sandwiches and maybe moving towards some home fries, although I must admit I have a soft spot for crinkle cuts. I can’t wait to return when I can kick back some drinks and try some other menu items. The nachos, large salads, and French toast particularly caught my eye.

The Remedy Diner has raised the bar for vegetarian and vegan options in downtown Raleigh with a diverse selection of appetizers, sandwiches and breakfast choices. The vegan chicken salad was approachable and tasty. Inside the diner you’ll find a relaxed, personal atmosphere accompanied by a solid 80s musical palate. The Remedy Diner creates a unique sense of place and will inevitably become a valuable voice in the downtown dining scene.

Downtown Raleigh Breakfast Brunch
Just OK. Food, atmosphere, service - just OK.
I can’t wait to try it. Thanks for the quick review.
I went today and the food was great! I had the Spicy Turkey Sandwich and I also tried the nachos a friend got. Both delicious. I thought the service was very good today, especially for the first day open. I honestly wasn’t expecting much being their first day but I was more than pleased with the food and service. I plan to return regularly!
I hope people give them a try and remember they just opened! I’m sure it will only get better.
Jedidiah-did they comp your meal or something? I had lunch today and was was surprisingly unimpressed. I too ate the Spicy Turkey mangled sandwich-yes, it was barely in sandwich form when brought to my table. I had one jalapeño on one half and about 7 or 8 on the other. I believe the menu says “comes with chips” and “add fries for $2.50”, so I ordered additional fries. They are not fresh, quite possibly Ore-Ida deep frozen fries and are few and far between. And the “add” really means “instead of chips, you can have a few” fries for $2.50 more.
The design was simple/cozy, although a little unfortunately cheap looking. The place is painted like a boring pet rock, with puke green, textured walls and inconsistently purple ceiling… perhaps I’m spoiled by the dozen or so other great restaurants nearby who have fresher tasting ingredients and a more comfortable set up. It will be interesting to see how this place does, hopefully the bar crowd will help this place do well.
I thought it was okay—the vegetarian selection is definitely a plus—but I was kind of surprised by how much of my food seems like it wasn’t made at the restaurant. Chips out of a bag, pitas and hummus that could have been off the shelf at Trader Joe’s…it wasn’t bad, and I’ll definitely be back to try more menu items. The service was great. It’s a cute little place. Great location. Hopefully, given a few months of experience under their belts, this place will turn out really nicely. I’m just kind of ambivalent after my first visit.
Freebo,
If your sandwich was mangled, you should have sent it back. We would have happily remade it for you. All the sandwiches come with chips, you can upgrade to fries for $2.50. If you feel like you didn’t get enough fries you should have let your server know. We would have gladly comped your meal.
Spookyjon,
All of the bread (pita included) is from Neomonde and is delivered fresh daily. The chips are Lay’s. More than likely, we won’t ever make homemade potato chips. But we’ll keep your suggestion in mind. The hummus, pico de gallo, vegan chicken salad, regular chicken salad, veggie meatballs, and too many other items to list are made in-house from scratch. If you have a question about whether something is made on-site or brought in, please ask. We’ll be happy to tell you.
Thanks for coming in!
Carrie- Manager
My husband brought home take out yesterday. We had the vegan chicken salad and veggie meatball sub, they were both delicious. The veg. chicken salad was pretty much the same as Whole Foods, but with more flavor. Also, the portion of the WF vegan chicken salad sandwich is a bit larger, but I’ll pay more for the flavor and atmosphere.
I’m really excited to try their other vegetarian items and their breakfast. I think this will be a regular lunch place for me!
I think Freebo has a good point. Not certain what the rules or with “new media” or blogs but if you all are receiving comped meals you should probably divulge that to the reader. Look forward to trying this place though.
Everyone paid for their meal. There is nothing to divulge. Those are our opinions, take it or leave it.
Freebo/bb (and everyone else that wonders),
New Raleigh does not receive free or reduced priced meals and/or drinks in return for a review (positive or negative). We write about Raleigh because we love it and want to make it a better city with more diversity and not for any other reason. We hope this is why you read the site and not because when you disagree with our statements that you think it is because we are fed by the machine and/or freeloaders. It is actually the exact opposite.
Jedidiah
I ordered the Reuben yesterday and thought it was pretty tasty. The space was cozy and I could see myself bringing a friend there for a meal. I too would like to see homemade chips. I’m gonna give it some time and visit again.
Carrie,
Thank you for your instructions, however I disagree. Seeing as how it was obviously my first time dining at your establishment, I was not accustomed to a standard food presentation or portion size. Not knowing what to expect is part of the fun of trying a new restaurant. In this case, I was clearly disappointed and further disappointed by telling me what I SHOULD have done. As a guest in your restaurant, I SHOULD NOT have to send food back because it wasn’t put together well. I SHOULD NOT have to say that I didn’t get enough fries when I feel that I have a small portion. Perhaps these are things that should be addressed in house and not in a public forum. This post poses the question “How was your first experience at Remedy?” not what SHOULD a guest in the restaurant have done to make their first visit more satisfying. I believe that pointing the finger at an unsatisfied customer, the way that you have, and saying what they SHOULD have done reflects a poor management style. I am not in charge of how the food is prepared nor how large the portions should be and also not in charge of putting “Served with chips, add fries for $2.50” when it means substitute fries for $2.50-this is a responsibility of the restaurant and of its management and employees. I feel that I answered the posed question appropriately and I hope that my next visit to your restaurant will yield better results. I hope that my experience is not shared by many others and that when they do occur that they are handled more appropriately.
Freebo
^dude, step back from the ledge. No matter how many times you say SHOULD, if you read her post she wasn’t being forcefull at all. I think this last post should prove to the rest of us on here exactly what type of customer you are. If the sandwich is bad enough for you to get on a public forum and use the term “mangled” then you SHOULD SHOULD SHOULD have asked them nicely to correct it at the establishment. That is YOUR DUTY as a customer. Everybody is different…I myself wouldn’t have noticed the shape of the sandwich unless it came without bread, and I damn sure wouldn’t have done a “rain man” style count of the jalapenos on either side of my sandwich.
She clearly wanted you to enjoy your experience, and if YOU are unhappy with your sandwich, only YOU can relay that message to the staff so they can correct it. Its very tough to read minds in the restaurant industry. Same goes for the “amount” of fries. Restaurants throw plates of those things away every day, so I am sure each cook tries to make an accurate guess as to a sufficient portion of fries. If YOU feel like you got too few, speak up and ask for some more!
Hi Freebo,
I just read both of your comments as well as the manager’s. I personally had a great experience there yesterday and I’m sorry to hear that you did not. It just sounded to me like that manager was just trying to make your experience better with her suggestions. I’m sure that they are still learning and figuring things out as to portions, etc and will learn along the way. I am sure they in no way meant to disappoint you or any of their customers. I’m looking forward to going back there and trying other things.
By the way, I paid for my meal as well and do not know the people there. Just a customer.
Good grief - I love this site, but why are so many pretentious whiners attracted to it - and always quick to put their two-surly-cents in?? I’m sure in your miserable worlds, you do everything perfectly, all the time, and pass butterflies instead of gas like the rest of us schmucks…but come on. Give the people a break. They are a modest mom and pop establishment, no? They are LOCAL, putting their blood, sweat, and tears into opening a business during an utterly crappy time, no? Since they aren’t Applebee’s with their 3-ring “Standard Operating Procedures” binder in place, they are working out kinks - and thank goodness they’re smart enough to not only seek guest input, but willing to rectify a less than stellar experience. The world doesn’t revolve around reading your mind, Freebo. Blah, blah, blah - entitled to your opinion - free speech - whatever. I’m going to go out on a limb and say they won’t shed too many tears if you don’t hurry back anytime soon. There’s a suck-the-life-and-joy-out-of-every-thing-you-touch aura to your posts.
I think the place looks great - it’s comfy and cozy and has come a long way since the Roly Poly days. Everyone’s a critic - people complain about the lack of comfortable, funky places downtown that aren’t all Solas-ed out, and then you have the Isaac Mizrahi’s of the world, complaining about textured walls and how the world owes them something because they suck. Best wishes Remedy - we’re thrilled to have you around the corner!
Given my attachment to potatoes you should definitely use fresh. The farmers market has sweet potatoes at .49 a pound some times and sweet potato fries are amazing too.
I haven’t been yet, perhaps tonight.
i had the spicy turkey and thought the portions were on the smaller side and the food was average. the service was good and i will go again and try something else. i think everyone, including frebo, is entitled to their own opinion when there is a question like what jed posted. i do love the rainman reference.
They just opened… Things dont always happen smoothly when you first open. The employees will not know the menu to the T they will be easily flustered… There will be a variance in presentation and taste at first too. Thats all normal.
Take for instance Boylan Brew Pub. I went there and they were out of sausage and they were not frying food. B/C their grease was dirty. The second one there could be prevented but the first one was simply not knowing how much to order. It will happen again until they are able to predict well things will sell.
Criticism is good. It shows you where your week points are. Freebos sandwich was handled by at least 2-3 people before it made it to his table. Thus one of them should have caught it… but they just opened so thats going to happen. They now know they need to focus a little harder on consistency, which by a bulk of the post is good.
As for the response by The Remedy… That shouldnt have happened. She is right that if he didnt like it then he should have spoke up… That is his problem for not correcting what he thought was wrong. Even if your intentions are good responding to rants and raves is a bad idea. Clearly she was just trying to nicely respond to his rant, but evidently it pissed him off.
Ruben here I come! Sweet potato fries would be awesome!
Tim/Jedidiah - Meant no insult by asking about the comped meals. Glad to hear you all aren’t, it adds credibility to your reviews.
As for Remedy I plan on hitting it up tomorrow.
You wanted potato chips and fries?!? That’s excessive.
i enjoyed my time at remedy yesterday. i split the roast beef and blt with a friend. i didn’t order fries and i did have a draft stone ipa, and a pbr after. i know a lot of the people working there and it was their FIRST day. please don’t bash a place on opening day. criticisms, yes. but give them a chance before you open your big mouth and see if they get it right, next time. or complain, like most normal people, if you do not feel like you got what you asked for. i’m sure they wouldn’t have had a problem with it, as carrie stated.
my friends and i tried the vegan chicken salad, veggie meatball sub, and veggie blt. all were delicious! the service was great, the food came out fast, and overall it was a great experience. i can’t wait to go back again and try more of the food.
i had the big boy there yesterday and it was quite good, i see going there quite a bit, if you’re looking for a foo foo over the top dining experience this isn’t it, its a sandwich shop, and a very good one at that, but thats just what it is, and honestly just what raleigh needs, good inexpensive food and cold beer.
and give these guys a freakin’ break, how long have then been open, 3 days? there are still kinks to work out, like any business, you figure out what works and what doesn’t. opening a restaurant isn’t easy, if you feel the need to tell people how they should run their business, then maybe you should start your own and show everyone how its done.
If you like simple this is the place! Nothing about the space or the menu will WOW you but you will definitely find food and drinks. It’s a good alternative if you get bored of your favorite spot(s). All the best to the folks at Remedy!!
Hey Freebo… you SHOULD get your head out of your ass. What’s your agenda here anyway?
Just got back from lunch at The Remedy… The spicey turkey is great, the service was good and the place looks great. I’m looking forward to having a few drinks at the bar one night soon… probably a whole different feel at night than during lunch. Good job Remedy!
Joel were your jalapenos in perfect little lines with small square mustaches? Or were they out for formation like a drunken sailor? LOL
Hey it was good for what ale’s me…i had the club and could barely finish. Great to see a true local start-up. When is the last time bootstraps and not moneybags opened a place in Raleigh? Keep it up and im sure all the changes will be good ones.
Just got back from Remedy. I had a spicy turkey and my companion a mediterranean. We both loved our sandwiches, and I thought the fries were good too. I’m getting sick of “home fries” since they are usually pretty gross, so I’m glad they didn’t go this route. The service was awesome. I would be worried about going on a busy night, since it is a small place…And I think the prices are about 1.50 too high (My turkey sandwich and fries was 10 bucks!). These are my only negative observations.
They fed me real chicken. I was the saddest vegetarian kid for about five minutes. Then we walked across the street to Cafe Luna and my birthday got a lot better.
The service was pretty horrendous.
Wow thats a little worse than a disheveled sandwich. I hope you said something about that one!
Whats their beer list like beside Stone and Blue Moon?
From their website..
Angry Angel
Bad Penny
Bass
Becks
Belhaven

What are the beer prices….domestics at this establishment?
if anyone still cares…. my husband and i ate there last night. first off, i LOVE the atmosphere. it has an actual urban feel to it… the combo bar/booths/scattered tables, plus the location i think is what creates this. so A+ on the experience.
as far as the food: my club was fantastic and my husband seemed to like his spicy turkey. i was sad that they don’t serve pickle spears with their sandwiches… mine was a perfect deli sandwich that really needed a pickle with it. i was disappointed in the ranch… tasted store bought. and the fry issue needs quick resolution. either do like the raleigh times, the pit, etc and make hand cut home made fries, or don’t charge $2.50. we didn’t order them because we saw from other’s plates that really, they’re ore-ida out of a bag. if those came with the sandwich for no extra then great. but don’t charge customers that much for those fries. the sandwich was good enough to warrant yummy homemade fries with home made ranch…
i will try it again but i hope they up the ante a little on a few things. really though, the club sandwich is probably the best i’ve had in raleigh.
Simple. Delicious. Non-pretentious and without an agenda, The Remedy Diner is something Raleigh has been needing and waiting for.
Seriously…The food is NOT good at all. I can cook better at home. I appreciate the fact there is a new establishment downtown, and I REALLY wanted it to be great. But great, the Remedy is not. I would be up for going again to drink a beer, but I will not eat there at those prices again (I can buy an entire bag of frozen fries for $2.50…not just 1 poorly heated serving).
I ate dinner at the Remedy Diner last night and thoroughly enjoyed my experience. It was a nice change of pace to go somewhere with some personality that wasn’t Mexican food and didn’t cost an arm and a leg.
The service was great – my waitress kept my drink full all night without seeming like she was lurking over me. As a vegetarian I really appreciated their wide selection, as most of the time when I dine out I am left with only one or two options once I go through the process of elimination. Last night I ordered the Capri and it was DELICIOUS. As for the great fry debate of ‘09, I like both homemade and crinkle fries. They are both sliced potatoes deep fried and covered with salt, as long as they are hot and fresh they are going to be tasty in my book, and my fries at the Remedy were ‘straight out of the fryer’ fresh.
I am really excited that something like the Remedy has opened up in Raleigh and I hope they do really well so that more places like it will open up in the city instead of setting up shop in Durham, Chapel Hill, etc.
i doubt they were straight out of the fryer-i don’t think that there is a hood so they wouldn’t be able to fry the fries… this would likely limit them to baking frozen fries one tray after another…how unfortunate.
Not impressed…i had the create a salad…the spinach was room temperature…
the cheese fries are a waste of money…frozen krinkle cut, with minced bacon and huge chunks of scallions…a true waste…
the waitress wasn’t that great either…slow, and she made a comment to me after i picked something i didn’t order out of my salad and put it on the table beside my plate…not like i had an extra napkin on the table to put it on…
i’d probably try it again in 6 months…if they’re still open…
I’ve eaten at the Remedy a few times this week and so far, I’m impressed. It is rare to find a modestly priced eatery that is casual with great food and a full bar. I have enjoyed the different sandwiches I’ve gotten and I loved the fries. (By the way, they are fried. On the way to the restroom, I saw a hoodless fryer in the kitchen.) I like going to a low-key place and having a quick sandwich and a drink or two and this is the perfect spot.
I, for one, love the fact that this is a locally owned establishment. It is hard work opening a business in this town where the city makes it almost impossible. Keep in mind that this place has been open for less than a week and there will be issues to be worked out. Give them a chance and give them your support. Otherwise this town is going to be nothing but Applesbees and McDonalds. I think it’s great seeing new places open downtown and to see how things have improved, especially in this economy.
I love the place so far and I know it will get even better the longer they are open.
I work with downtown 5 picky eaters so I suggested take out lunch from The Remedy with some trepidation on Friday. Everyone, including the “food allergy to everything” and “eats no vegetables” co-workers were happy. The veggie meatball sub was delicious! We will definitely order there again and I can’t wait to go back for dinner.
We ate there Saturday then walked over over to “STUFF” on Martin then up to Glennwood South area and then back to Moores Square.
The food was good and very low priced. I had the spice turkey sandwich-yum!
Wife and I ate there on Friday during First Friday. Service was fair and the food was decent for the price. I had chicken salad in a pita which was pretty good. Wife had nachos which were okay but nothing special. My vodka drink was a decent pour for the price. Overall, I rate our experience as average but we will try it again.
I have been looking forward to eating at The Remedy ever since they opened. Living downtown, I am always excited to try new eateries. Walking in, I fell in love. The ambiance is something I think Raleigh needs. I have to admit, the main reason I was going was to have a Stone IPA. Unfortunately, they were out of the Stone, but replaced it with an Aviator Brewing beer, so glad they are keeping it local. The food was good. I had the Reuben and it was better than Boylan Brew Pub. Rivaling the Times Bar Reuben, I would order it again. Can’t wait to go back and try the vegetarian side of the menu.
Service was ok. But overall, I would go back. Just with they had more outdoor seating.
What are you gonna get for $10 to eat in this town anyway? If a $10 tag for edible food is too much for you to swallow then get your cheap ass to McDonalds or Hardee’s or Skatz or somewhere where you can get the value you want to pay for. I bet you get your wallet reamed out two three times a week at Times Bar, which, in my opinion is one of the worst deals in town for food. Glad the Remedy is in town. If the fries are too controversial for this postmodern bunch of Simpson’s characters, they should dump fries from the menu and serve Ruffles. Goddamn those things are delicious! That would surely piss off somebody while they ate everything on the plate. Oh, Dookie Eater, that’s damn near plagerism, but between you and I, Dookie Gobbler is on George Clinton’s T-Shirt on Hardcore Jollies.
Your name is Dookie Bobbler!

The people of Raleigh are so easily impressed that they openly settle for mediocrity on a regular basis. It is not a diner in any way, I guess it’s become trendy to tag your spot as a diner. The food is not good. I’ve eaten there twice. Somebody wrote that it’s just what Raleigh needs, an inexpensive sandwich shop with cold beer? Raleigh has too many of those, and most of them suck. Where’s the diversity (and before somebody jumps on me by saying that I can go from eating Mexican at El Rodeo to eating Cajun at the Big Easy- SAVE IT!)? If Raleigh is ever going to grow up it needs not to continue the trend of opening places that are the same as everybody else’s place (unless it has something unique and worth-while to offer). Besides, you can get cold beer just about anywhere, and atleast that’s a product that maintains it’s consistency. The food, for what it is, is indeed expensive, tag on $2.50 for frozen fries (and I though the Times was ridiculous for doing that) and you’re spending 10+ bucks on a sandwich and fries that’s not even great. For the quality of the ingredients they’re putting into them, they could charge 5.50 a pop including fries and still make a profit off of those willing to settle for inferior products. I’m not here to bash them; I work downtown, I live downtown, I play downtown, and I believe in local small business. But, with that said, just because it’s local doesn’t make it good. The bartender was cool enough to be honest and educated about what he was serving behind the bar, and he knew his wines- one really strong point.
“The people of Raleigh are so easily impressed that they openly settle for mediocrity on a regular basis.”
Wow. Really? You’re stereotyping an entire city’s population based on a few comments posted on a blog? Keep up the good work. If you live, work, and play in downtown Raleigh, doesn’t your statement include yourself, or do you consider yourself the “people” of another city?
I’m not stereotyping anybody, I read more than one blog and the general sense is the same- people around here (NOT ALL, if I need to clarify that for you) will rave about things that aren’t even great, while the true gems get no attention or notoriety. We put so much emphasis on the same type of places that anything that differs from that will rarely get the recognition it deserves. And, btw, I consider myself a person who generally has to SETTLE for something when I go out to eat, not just in downtown, but the area in general. 8/10 times I go out I feel like I wasted my money on something that was just “okay”. Sorry I offended you, I’m sure you’ll get over it.
@freebo I finally went there and ordered a Spicey Turkey sandwich. Mine was orderly except I didnt spot any jalapenos so I cant report on their orderlyness. The sandwich was spicey enough with out them.
I enjoyed it.
The bread was good except you can tell the smashed the hell out of it while it was on the grill b/c the bread was < 1/8in thick in the middle
man i can’t wait until mindcrimes restaurant opens up, i can see it now, lots of choices, inexpensive, TONS of diversity, its going to be perfect, just absolute perfection. everyone will dance through the streets singing the praises of this new restaurant and noone will complain about a thing, because it will be perfect.
i have ten bucks that says that MC will get a key to the city and that noone, NOONE will say anything negative about it because again it will be perfect.
how on earth will all the other mediocre places be able to survive when the hordes descend upon this jewel of the restaurant world
Well, oakcity, successful people don’t surround themselves with ‘yes-men’, it breeds mediocrity. It’s not about the price- if it’s good I have no problem paying any amount for food and drinks as long as it’s good. Why pay 10 bucks for a sandwich and fries that are not good when you can go somewhere like Fins during lunch and pay less for an excellent product? Hell, if you want something along the same lines why not go to the Burgerhut on W. Morgan where their food is actually good and diner-style. Stop riding their jockstrap.
I can’t wait to try Remedy again because I wasn’t too impressed with my first try! Our service was pretty lousy, we waited about 45 minutes for our food, our food was mediocre to boring, we sat over empty beers for at least a half an hour (and still never got asked if we wanted another!) and watched a couple walk out after they weren’t tended to for over 15 minutes. Beer was good!
I went to the Remedy today and thought it was awesome. I had great service, great food, and loved the laid back vibe. They told me they are opening a huge back patio. I can’t wait!
All fries at the majority of restuarants are frozen. Home fries is just a description of the style of fry. It doesn’t mean someone is in the back slicing up potatoes. That is impractical. Maybe in super, high-end establishments, but not for regular places. They could order “home fry” style fries and some of you people would assume that it meant they were hand made in the kitchen. Please people! Decide what you like: the crinkle cut, the home fry (straight cut), shoestring fry (skinny cut), etc. All are frozen.
No one makes their own fries! Also, when you upgrade to fries, you get a whole basket. I don’t know what you are talking about. That’s reasonable.
And the fries are fried in a special hoodless fryer. They are not baked. Call them and ask.

My wife and I had our first experience going to Remedy last night. We both LOVED it. We had already eaten at the Busy Bee and came across Remedy while taking a walk around Moore Square. We sat at the Bar and had a great conversation with the Bartender who let us sample all kinds of great wines. We each ordered a glass of red wine and had some desert. We had their vegan apple pie and vegan brownie. Both were excellent! We hung at the bar for an hour or so and I was pleased to see the place was packed with people eating at 8:30 on a Thursday night. This is one of my new favorite places in Downtwon Raleigh and will keep me coming back for more.
