This Thursday, the sixth annual Riverkeeper Film Festival kicks off with events in Raleigh. The fest, sponsored by the Neuse Riverkeeper Foundation, will screen a variety of water-themed films at the Rialto Theater, preceded by a reception at the Third Place. Additional screenings are scheduled to take place in Durham, at the Durham Arts Council, on Friday, with more events also taking place over the weekend in Oriental and New Bern. The Foundation is a non-profit organization that strives to protect and preserve the Neuse River Basin through advocacy and education.

Stephanie Bishop, spokesperson for the film festival, says that "the goal for the event is to raise awareness for our work to protect the Neuse River basin, while providing an enjoyable evening of short films." She noted that the films selected for the festival cross all genres, while maintaining a common theme of water. This year's line up includes some interesting selections, such as Clam Pie, a quirky award winning comedy about the strange dreams a woman experiences after eating clam pie, alongside several inspiring documentaries and an animated short. A short film locally produced and created by Exploris Middle School students will also be shown at the Rialto during the festival.

Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children/students and may be purchased at the Neuse Riverkeeper Foundation's website. The festival event begins at 6:30pm this Thursday at the Third Place, with a wine and cheese reception prior to the screenings at the Rialto at 7:30pm.
