The new Raleigh City Council members were sworn in last week and the previous Mayor Pro Tem, Nancy McFarlane took over from Charles Meeker as Raleigh's new mayor. This left the Mayor Pro Tem spot open and fourth term councilmember Russ Stephenson has been appointed to this position.
The previous City Council voted to change the Pro Tem appointment to a one-year position rather than the two-year commitment that was in place a few years ago. This means that Stephenson will serve as Raleigh's Pro Tem for 2012 and Eugene Weeks, the District C representative who is serving his first full term on the council, will serve in 2013. The Mayor Pro Tem fulfills the duties of the Mayor if, god forbid, Nancy McFarlane is unable to do so.
