Back in November, we posted about a New York Times article that detailed ‘The Good Life’ over at SAS in Cary and what a fabulous place the analytics/software company was to work. Now, a Fortune list has confirmed that indeed, SAS is the top company to work for in the United States at the moment.

SAS was previously ranked 20th in the list and the reasons (on site health care, gym, and work-life center) surrounding its jump to #1 are basically all of the ones illustrated previously by the NYTimes article.

Rank: 1 (Previous rank: 20)
What makes it so great?
One of the Best Companies for all 13 years, SAS boasts a laundry list of benefits—high-quality child care at $410 a month, 90% coverage of the health insurance premium, unlimited sick days, a medical center staffed by four physicians and 10 nurse practitioners (at no cost to employees), a free 66,000-square-foot fitness center and natatorium, a lending library, and a summer camp for children.
The architect of this culture—based on “trust between our employees and the company”—is Jim Goodnight, its co-founder, and the only CEO that SAS has had in its 34-year history.

Some might think that with all those perks, Goodnight was giving away the store. Not so. SAS is highly profitable and ranks as the world’s largest privately owned software company. Turnover is the industry’s lowest at 2%.

Headquarters: 100 SAS Campus Dr.
Cary, NC 27513
2008 revenue ($ millions): 2,300**

NewCary.com. Just bought the domain. BOOM!

Kind of interesting that a lot of the most interesting and superlative posts on New Raleigh are about things going on in Cary, Durham and Chapel Hill.

That All Black Van comic is doing…its doing good

It sounds like JimH has Raleigh envy.  Sure, Cary is home to SAS, but not much else except suburban hell.  Good day sir!

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH, JB! Yes, everyone should be extremely jealous of Raleigh. All of those vacant floors in the RBC and Wachovia towers must drive them crazy with envy!

Or maybe it will be the Christian Science Reading Room that is going to drive companies like Epic Games downtown.

HA! Raleigh beats Cary any day….seriously Cary thought Gypsy’s Shiny Diner was TOO SHINY! I work in Cary and its Boring…I wouldn’t use it’s name in the same sentence with Durham and Chapel Hill…

Touche on Gypsy’s Shiny Diner. However, you should take a look at the restrictions Raleigh has on things like vertical signage, street music, etc.

The last time Raleigh’s “official” favorite band, The Avett Brothers, played in this area it was in Cary. Same with Wilco. Same with Bon Iver.

Jeez, could Cary be more hipster than Raleigh? That would be the ULTIMATE irony!

OH! And Cary already has bike lanes!!!

um yeah, no, Cary is nowhere near “hip”...I could name a hundred other bands that have played in Raleigh, Durham or Chapel Hill….
so are there no signage laws in Cary or street music laws? interesting….

Cary is what it is, a bedroom community full of nondescript chain restaurants, retail and cookie cutter developments. The town and associated activities and businesses cater to families and tend to keep things vanilla.

Raleigh is able to strike a balance across it’s population. If you want family friendly you can have it. You want to go to an art walk, Reading by a famous author, check out an up and coming local band or attend a NHL or College game you have it. Not to mention the culinary options in Raleigh are vastly superior to most anything in Cary.

But, if your measure of a cool place is a having a giant corporate campus, dinner at Caraba’s, an amphitheater that allows bands to play slightly above a library conversation. Then Cary is the place to be.

BTW, unless the city relents on the very restrictive noise restrictions. the acts you mentioned and many other “hip acts” will not be playing Koko Booth again.

Had a feeling you were trolling, but had to make sure no one accidentally attempts to hang out in Cary. Would be sad to read about someone on a fix wheel run over on Tryon Rd or a guy in skinny jeans beat up and arrested at O’Charley’s.
