The Wilmont on Hillsborough Street has been having some code problems lately but a band of folks have launched a new website in hopes of saving the building. Go to the website, explore and sign the petition.

Those balconies have always frightened me when I drive by. I could never go out on to them!!
Those balconies are solid, not a day goes by that I’m not on them. Plus they’ve been there for 80+ years, I think they deserve some cred.
I am not sure longevity necessarily makes a balcony more credibly safe.
I seriously doubt that those actual balconies are the originals. At the very least the railings are not.
The only issue with those balconies (and yes, I have been on one) is the low railings. As someone who stands 6’3”, I can tell you it wouldn’t take much for to topple over. I’d be much more worried about that happening than the entire balcony coming down.
In fairness to Arthur, though, I had often wondered about them before I actually set foot on one.
here comes the progress train…
Yes, save it from its neglectful owner. Nobody is knocking the building down, they are just taking a slumlord to task.
i loved living in the wilmont, one of the best apartment buildings in town, and the apartments themselves are HUGE!!
i never had a problem there, Rick would have never let it get to that point. Bring back Rick and let him rebuild it!!
OK, I checked this morning & I had it all wrong. I was thinking of the sister property across the way. You may now ignore my comment above. ![]()
