This guy’s work is fantastic.  He combines layers and layers of pantone chips, pages from old books, and hand sketches, with beautiful and provocative paintings of human figures on top of it all.  His talk should be provocative as well.

Regional Emerging Artist in Residence Prospectus

We welcome Shaun Richards as our new Regional Emerging Artist-in-Residence. Established in January 2000, the Regional Emerging Artist Residency is a program that provides emerging visual artists with time and space to explore their work in a supportive, thriving, artistic environment. The residency includes a private, rent-free studio with 24-hour access. Recipients are selected through a call to artists held twice a year. The next deadline is April 1, 2007 for a July 2007 - January 2008 residency. Interested applicants may view the prospectus for this residency.

Richards was born in Brunswick, GA and raised in Franklin, VA. Being surrounded by corn, cotton, soybean fields, and “the ever-present odor of the local paper mill” has inspired his recent series focused on the South - the history, the traditions, and the rural in contrast with the ever expanding global community and the technology of contemporary life.

Richards earned a BA in Art from University of North Carolina – Wilmington in 1999. He studied at Empire State College as a non-matriculated graduate student before relocating to Raleigh, NC in 2006.

While in residence, Richards plans to continue his exploration of the southeastern United States through large-scale paintings, drawings, photography, and sculpture.
