Sidetrack Brewpub Becomes Boylan Bridge Brewpub

Sidetrack Brewpub has been under consideration/construction for years now.  I remember when the owner held an opening over 2 years ago, seeking investments.  I still have my wooden nickel that is redeemable for a free beer if it ever opens.  On Friday a satirically written announcement popped up on their website stating another piece of the puzzle has changed.  It will now be called Boylan Bridge Brewpub, for legal reasons (not for exaggerated alliteration).

TODAY! - Friday May 2, 2008 - We are changing the name of the Sidetrack Brewpub.

A Chicago lawyer on Madison Street, (not to be confused with Madison Avenue which is owned by New York and not Chicago), has written us a letter ordering us to cease and desist using the word Sidetrack. He represents a client who owns a place called The Sidetrack and has acquired a trademark on the word.

Our new name will be The Boylan Bridge Brewpub which our supporters already refer to as “The Bridge”. In the future you will log on to http://www.boylanbridge.com which is under construction right now and should be ready by Monday May 05. (The website, not the bridge.)

Geez… so now everytime I say I’m getting “Sidetrack"-ed some smart guy thinks he owns that phrase?

I’ll still take Boylan Bridge Brewpub, but Sidetrack was a little easier on the tounge.

Wow. Our litigious society never ceases to disgust me. Somehow this sounds like someone with the money to hire a lawyer picking on the little guy.

I googled the word “sidetrack” and it came up with several other items besides the Chicago incarnation with the name “sidetrack,” including a bar & grill in Ypsilanti, some kind of software, a film studio, a hobby shop, and a radio show, to name a few. I wonder why those other places/companies/software haven’t been ordered to cease and desist as well?

In any case, I can’t wait for the Sidetrack (which we will always call it)/Boylan Bridge Brewpub to open so we can support it.

Sidetracks is also a good grill and restaurant in Elon if you ever happen to be in that town (not sure why you would be, but just in case).  Perhaps there is a lawsuit coming their way.....
