Silver at the Pour House Saturday

New Raleigh asks Brent Francese of Silver to give us the low-down on their show this Saturday, Aug. 22, after Downtown Live and a new record coming out this fall. Show up with a DTL wrist band, and you’ll save $2 off the cover charge. Show up with a handbill, and you’ll walk away with a copy of their +/- EP.

So Silver formed in ‘08… How did you guys meet?
Pat and I went to high school together in Charlotte, and through college at State (me - Architecture, Pat - Finance).  We always played music together, but upon getting our degrees we finally had a little freedom to say, “Hey, we can actually pursue this music thing a little harder.”  It was a little backwards for us.

We decided to go ahead and crank out our degrees before realizing we could actually do this thing called music.  We found John Enzor and things got serious with recording the +/- EP concept.  Upon me moving to Raleigh, from Asheville, a year ago we were able to really nail down 7-8 songs that we thought were worth recording.

What’s the significance of your name, Silver?
Silver came from sitting at the Tir Na Nog Irish Pub one night and trying to think of a name for the project that had a simple, clean, easy name to remember that would reflect the sound that we were going for.  Polished, but still rough around the edges.  Silver seemed to fit.

You guys have a pretty different sound than most of the local scene, what are some of your influences?
We’re all influenced from music over the pond.  Radiohead, Muse, and U2 were big influences. There’s a certain southern regional sound that is there in the sound too.  It’s kind of buried beneath the music.  Kings of Leon is a big current influence that carries some of those similarities.

What’s so special about the show on Saturday?
It’s a big show for us locally, because we haven’t played a big show in Raleigh in awhile and we’re giving away our EP +/- for free if you have one of our 08_22_09 handbills.

If I want to get a handbill from you guys, between now and the show, how and where should I be?
We’ll be out promoting for the show at NC State Thursday on campus around 12-2PM, at the Lincoln Theatre on Friday at 11PM and the day of the show during the last Downtown Live.  We’ll have four or five people passing the handbills out then, so that should be the easiest time to get your hands on one.

You guys are going back into the studio this fall, will we be able to hear any of the new material at the show?
Yes.  We are going into Low Watt Studios this fall to do another batch of songs which we think are stronger individually than the +/- tunes.  It probably will not be full length, but 4-5 solid songs that really portray our live sound better.  A lot of that energy can get lost in recording so we are hoping to just narrow it down to a few songs and really put forth a lot of effort and energy to portray that feel into a record.

The shows are definitely high energy.  There are only three of us and I’m behind the drum kit so there is a lot of movement on stage.  It’s a pretty good wall of sound for three people.  We like to try and make up for what we don’t have in our energy on stage.  It really brings the audience with us during the show.

Catch Silver and Colourslide at The Pour House after Downtown live. Doors open at 5:00, show starts at 10:00.
