Sitti Opens Monday, Upscale Lebanese from Neomonde

Sitti Lebanese Restaurant

The wait is over for the much anticipated collaboration between Empire Eats and Neomonde. Sitti opens this Monday. The space has a wonderful familial feel to it as the walls are lined with photographs of both side’s Lebanese family members, one of the most poignant being a painted portrait of Greg Hatem’s grandmother. (Sitti is the Lebanese word for grandmother.) At the center of the room is a long family-style dining table with a custom-made cedar top and a beautiful, intricately carved piece of wood retrieved from the Library of Congress as the base. The phenomenal wood and glass bar that fills the right side of the room is thought to originate all the way back to the 1930s in Chicago.

Neomonde has grown from a tiny deli into a busy destination tucked in a corner near Meredith.  So tucked away, Sitti could be seen as an opportunity for the celebrated restaurateurs to sit in the public eye and be a destination for visitors as well as townies-in-the-know.  From a look at the menu online, the dishes will range from the classic Neomonde favorites (kabobs, shawarmas, etc.), to new twists like pizzettes and a delicious-sounding Fatteh with Lamb (stewed lamb over crispy pita chips, pine nuts, whipped yogurt, garlic, chick peas, and mint). The prices are great, with lunch entrees ranging from $7 to $11, and dinner entrees in the mid-teens.

The restaurant will also be the perfect place to eat on a hot summer day, because not only does it have an outdoor patio out back, but the courtyard area is nestled between buildings, which gives it a perfect amount of shade. Empire has done a wonderful job designing a space that sits in one of the fastest growing areas downtown. Since we already know that Neomonde knows how to make amazing Mediterranean food, an upscale ethnic destination downtown is a welcome addition.

    Wow.  Looks great.

Greg always does a great job and I’m glad to see him honoring his grandmother. Can’t wait to give it a try.  We’ve needed a place like this in downtown for awhile now.

  • Bronce11/20 08:38 PM

I’m very much looking forward to this opening.  I got to walk around it, VERY cool space.  The courtyard will be welcomed in the spring.  Plus, they’re going to have Lion Stout on TAP!  Nice management as well.

  • TSnow2760411/20 10:26 PM

    I can’t wait.

  • Don11/21 08:49 AM

I can’t wait for this to open. I walked by early Wednesday and it looked like they were testing some of the dishes. It smelled delicious!

  • GD11/21 10:52 AM

One of my best friends is on the mgmt staff for this restaurant.  He gave me an early tour.  The courtyard in the back is going to be great and the space downstairs not shown is really nice as well.  I cannot wait to go eat here..

  • hackles1011/21 10:52 AM

Bar looks sweet, and the decor is elegant and simple.  Both Lunch and Dinner menus look fantastic.  Im fired up to try this place!

  • RaleighRob11/21 11:10 AM

Hopefully the hooka’s are for decoration only.  (If a place wants to be truly upscale, they’ll join the 21st century an be smoke-free.)

Definitely look forward to trying it though…Neomonde’s food is great and I’m sure this will be too.  The descriptions of the food on the online menu sounds delicious.  (I just hope Neomonde’s many vegetarian fans don’t mind that most of Sitti’s veggie dishes are relegated to the appetizer menu.)

That art deco bar is awesome!  Love it.  A perfect fit for that part of downtown!

  • al11/21 12:29 PM

I have a question. What does Greg Hatem have to do with Neomonde besides owning the building? Hasn’t Neomonde been a successful business in Raleigh for the past 20 years or so? And now they have to hang Hatem’s grandmother’s painting on the wall of their landlord’s building? That is sick. Maybe he is “partners” with the Neomonde people? Does that mean, “Empire properties rent is so high we will help you out with construction costs and in turn, you sell your soul to me (much like Ed Mitchell) and I get to share the fame of your already successful name—aka hang my grandmother’s pic on the wall?”

Regardless, I’m excited about the new restaurant and can’t wait to eat there. I’m sure it will be great.

  • David11/21 12:49 PM

    Try reading the article al.

  • Jason DiMambro11/21 01:04 PM

Empire Properties has done it again! The space look amazing! The partnership between Empire and Neomonde sounds like a great one. I’m looking forward to trying out Sitti for lunch sometime next week.

  • CF11/21 02:24 PM

I really thought I was going to, for once, get to the bottom of a thread and not come across a negative comment.  But that jerkoff had to go and put his grandmother’s picture on the wall.  The nerve of some people.

  • stefanie11/21 05:49 PM

Wow, I thought that courtyard was Cherokee’s private space.  It will be nice to get a chance to enjoy this space during the hot summer months…

  • James11/21 06:22 PM

Yeah ... geez.  We wouldn’t want anyone trying to honor their grandmother by putting a picture up.  What sort of unscrupulous sicko is this sinister Greg Hatem?  And how dare he actually use his real estate holdings for a profit.  He should allow anyone to rent his buildings for free and he should invest in a 42 LCD TV to put on the wall that can cycle through pictures of all of our grandmothers.

    Get a grip people ...

  • Scott L11/22 09:41 PM

Congrats on a job well done!  The menus look excellent.  Greg continues to do a great job of putting quality establishments downtown.

  • CF11/24 02:00 PM

Went for lunch today and it was excellent.  Very cool interior, good food, and good wait staff.  Suprisingly, the picture of grandma Hatem did not detract from the positive experience.

  • GD11/24 04:18 PM

I am going tonight for dinner…I look forward to this.

CF what did you have to eat?

  • CF11/24 05:07 PM

I had the beef shwarma (probably spelled that wrong) aned my wife had the falafel.  both were really good.

  • GD11/24 05:28 PM

    nice.

I know the chicken schwarma (sp?) is really good at neomonde so I imagine it would be here as well.

  • ford11/24 10:54 PM

    the kibbeh nayeh is delicious!

  • Oakie11/25 12:27 AM

We ate there last week and it was deee-lish! Might I HIGHLY recommend the beef shawarma (hummus was very yummy too). Also had the chicken kebob - and I must say - with all honesty - it was the best chicken I’ve ever had!

Sitti is a great space in one of the oldest commercial buildings left downtown - the view from the inside out - with all that marvelous storefront glass - is simply quite awesome. Great ambiance, great food - another favorite hangout!

P.S. I’m not naming any names, but someone whose name rhymes with “Pal” has some serious grandma issues. Obviously, a lack of warm fuzzies during a critical developmental period in life has caused a wee bit of hatin’. *insert group hug here*

  • GD11/25 10:19 AM

Last night I had the cheese rolls and basterma with friends to start out with.  Both of these apps were very good.  For our entrees, we got the kefta kabob, the chicken kabob, and the Samkeh Harra.  Each of these dishes were incredible.  We topped it off with Ashta which was a light dessert, but enough to let you know that you’ve eaten something sweet.  I will be returning here shortly.

  • corey3rd11/29 10:04 AM

I know this is a weird request, but when you guys do the photos of places - can we at least get one long shot of the exterior so those of us who have to go downtown can have a clear idea what to look for when we drive down the street looking for a parking space?

  • John Morris11/29 10:49 AM

    corey3rd: heilig1.jpg

  • John Morris11/29 10:52 AM

hm, I thought only a link would post, not the entire (squished) pic.

if you are Wilmington St. driving toward the Capitol, it’s on the right after you pass by the Hargett St intersection. There’s a parking deck directly across from the place.

  • corey3rd11/29 12:07 PM

thanks for the view and the parking deck info. It’s on our list for our next dinner out.

  • TAZ12/01 04:08 PM

FYI, Sitti is a partnership between Empire Eats and Neomonde.  Therefore, Greg Hatem has every right to hang a picture of his grandmother on the wall. Also, let it be know that there are pictures of the Saleeh’s (Nemonde owners) grandmother on the walls.

  • TheWaveLife12/01 05:09 PM

When I was downtown Saturday, news of this place was on everyone’s lips. It sounds great! I was talking with one of the (lovely) waitstaff at Times after she got off work. The hookah’s are for decoration only, so no-smoking (yay!). The location is superb (too bad Riviera couldn’t stick around, these neighbors would have complemented each other). Definitely looking forward to sampling what I’m sure will be another Empire success.

  • Karen A. Mann12/01 05:22 PM

Got a chance to eat there on Saturday night, and it was absolutely delicious. We ordered lots of “mezze” or appetizer plates. The haloumi cheese, sausage and hummus were amazing, and the Lebanese red wine that our server recommended was a perfect compliment.

  • corey3rd12/01 06:01 PM

“How come you got no brothers on the wall?”

seriously, the grandma photo comment gives me that horrible Do the Right Thing vibe.

Although I want to know where’s the pictures of Tony Shalhoub, Casey Kasem and Danny Thomas?

  • stefanie12/01 07:25 PM

Is it true that Sitti is no longer open for lunch?

  • katherine12/01 09:23 PM

We went for lunch on Friday and had a very nice experience…
I had the Goat Cheese Pizzette, very simple and delicious, my husband had the Okra Stew (a lamb stew with okra onions and spices in a tomato sauce) and it was fantastic…so much flavor…the Sitti salads were very fresh and then we had Halwet el Jebn (sweetened cheese) filled with Ashta (milk
pudding), orange blossom water syrup and crushed pistachio for dessert…I had never had anything like that before….great experience…
the waitstaff was OK, I think they are working out some kinks still but we will be going back very soon for dinner…CANT wait!

  • MMI12/02 11:57 PM

A good sign for Sitti—walking past the windows on Monday around 10pm, the place appeared to be at least half full.  That’s near closing on a MONDAY, people!

  • highjoeltage12/05 12:20 PM

I had an awesome meal there last week, great simple food and decor. Also, the fresh pitas straight from the oven are basically crack cocaine

  • Logan12/05 02:50 PM

I also had a great experience dining at Sitti (beef kabobs, yum!) I also love the basement dining room and am trying to come up with excuses to have a private party down there. Very glad to have this new option downtown.

  • Paul12/23 05:50 PM

Had really been looking forward to trying Sitti and did so at lunch today.Neomonde this ain’t! The food was ok but the service was poor, perhaps they need six months to get in the swing of things. The floor manager played around with the staff the entire lunch hour ( he also was dressed like he just rolled out of bed), we ordered soup and it came out three times as an appetizer despite asking for it as a main course. One of us waited ten minutes longer that everyone else for a kebab wrap (although it was very good). Had to ask the bartender for salt and our waitress never came back until the end of the meal to see how we were.  I also agree with Joe the pita is fantastic. The dining room is very nice and food is good but if you don’t need the vibe and bad service Neomonde is miles ahead of Sitti. I will however try again in a couple of months.

  • thomas b12/31 03:14 AM

My first time in tonight, and the place was packed. The kibbee might be the best I’ve ever had. The service was stellar, and the bill was unbelievably cheap-i’ll be back soon

  • Ben01/10 01:31 PM

Went there last night with several friends. Our experience was definitely hit-and-miss.

To start it off, our friends had called earlier in the week to make a reservation and did so. Except… we got there, and they [Sitti] told us “we don’t take reservations”. Um, what? Very odd that they would take our reservation and then claim otherwise!!!

Next, the atmosphere was strange. We felt like we were in something akin to a middle school cafeteria. Very high ceilings, little to no decor, with patrons packed in all over the place. You can see clear across from one side of the room to the other. There is no privacy, no divisions, no areas with lowered ceilings. It was very loud and noisy.  Also they need a double door chamber entrance at the front. Whenever anyone would come in, a cold breeze would blow through the entire restaurant which was very uncomfortable. There were also no curtains or decorations or anything on the front windows. Complete lack of privacy and any defined space within the restaurant. Overall the atmosphere was exceedingly bland and just didn’t have a comfy feeling that I like about so many other restaurants (especially ethnic) that I have been too. We felt like we were in a warehouse.

To continue the theme of “Sitti really needs an interior decorator and/or designer” the serving ware was very plain too. Plain white plates, plain clear glasses, plain silverware. Very unprofessional, like you would find at a Waffle House or a cafeteria. At most ethnic restaurants I have ever been to, the plates are either colored or have some sort of design or pattern on them, as well as the glasses and silverware.

Sitti really needs to get it together to make this place more comfortable and more unique. Then again, maybe Raleigh doesn’t have many discriminating diners who care about (or even notice) a great atmosphere and dining experience. What they have now is seriously lacking. There is no theme to this place, nothing that says “Oh yes, I’m in a Lebanese Restaurant”.

Finally, the food. Half of what we ordered was very very good. My partner and I were quite pleased with the cold lima bean stew (Fassoulia), the hot Lentil Soup, and the Falafel, although the 4 balls of falafel were very small (just a bit smaller than a golf ball), which seemed stingy given that they were $5 and falafel are made from cheap ingredients.

We also ordered the Fatayer and this was the largest disappointment. It is described as a “house made flatbread with spinach mixed with onions, olive oil, spices, and folded into a triangle” that is “served with a Sitti salad” for $8.59. Well, this description is VERY misleading as the main entree (the Fatayer) is smaller than a Snickers bar (I’m talking regular, not king size) while the side salad is much much larger. They should have described this as a salad with a small piece of herb bread. No, I’m not joking—it was that ridiculous.

Several of our friends were happy with their selections, but one of them ordered the chicken shawarma and it was unlike the menu description or any shawarma I have ever seen. It was NOT thinly sliced chicken (which is what a shawarma is, and what the menu described). No, the chicken was in small, frighteningly uniform pieces the size and shape of a small pinkie finger. It looked like some kind of Tyson crap from a frozen bag. NOT a shawarma. My friend tried it and didn’t even eat the rest of it.

Another friend ordered the Fresh Herb and Vegetable Tray. It was, I’m not kidding, pieces of vegetables on a plate. Like a half a head of romaine lettuce, whole scallions, tomato quarters, etc. We’re talking completely raw produce with no special preparation or real seasoning at all. Very odd.

Until they fix the decor and the warehouse-like atmosphere, we will not be going back.

  • chris01/10 02:54 PM

I was also there last night, and I can’t believe how packed this place was.  I had tried to make reservations and was told that while the restaurant doesn’t take any reservations, they would try their best.  I definately understood why they couldn’t, because there was hardly any room to stand.  We were able to get a table in the cackatail section right up in the window, and it was awesome people watching.  With drinks my table of three’s check was just under $75.  REPEAT under $75, I couldn’t believe it.  Our sever Jessica was right on with some great beer and food recomondations (kibbee mikli? was amazing).  My only complaint was that the music was more than a little bland, but I felt my meal was money well spent, and I can’t wait to go back.

  • GD01/12 10:28 AM

I just wanted to state, I’ve been to this place at least 5 to 7 times now and everytime I am completely happy.  I was also there on 1/10 and thankfully, I didn’t run into any problems as Ben and his friends did.

My food was what I ordered and it came as described on the menu, the waitstaff was stellar as usual and the bill always is cheaper tahn ti seems it should be.

I don’t get the poor decoration nor the feeling like a cafeteria as I have never been in a cafeteria that looks remotely as nice as Sitti.

I’m glad to have this affordable eatery downtown as an option.

  • arthurb301/12 11:33 AM

I was there Friday. It was ok. It was very noisy! The food was ok. I think lunch time would be a better experience since it might be quieter.

  • art01/13 10:49 AM

Wow, Ben, if you can give me the name and location of the cafeteria that looks like Sitti and has comparable food, I will be a regular.

This is a great, stylish, crowded urban restaurant.  Yes it is open and noisy, but that is the type of place it is.  There are hundreds of them in cities throughout the world.  The sparse furnishings and white china are very authentically Mediterranean.  White china is also common in many nice restaurants as chefs believe that it shows off their food the best.

Of course, no place is everyone’s cup of tea.  I am sure this new place still has some things to work out, but I love the place.  I have been four times now, and have had a great experience each time.

  • Ben01/13 12:07 PM

I’m not saying it wasn’t nice. Clearly, they spent a chunk of change on the bar and the large table in the middle. What it was lacking is a sense of ethnicity (no, a few hookahs in the corner does not really count). There was nothing that really gave the impression of Lebanese, Mediterranean, or even culture. It looked like any old bland restaurant with a few nice furnishings. Actually, it looked more like a warehouse art gallery.

The cafeteria remark was made to point out the lack of privacy, the crowdedness, and the noise. I still can’t believe there aren’t any curtains on the windows—it looks like a retail storefront, not a restaurant. Also there wasn’t anywhere (that I could see) in the place that looked like a cozy spot. No privacy. Huge gigantic ceiling towering over everything. Our opinions might differ, but to me, I like cozy and comfortable when I go out to eat, not feeling like I am in a warehouse (if you really want to understand this, read “A Pattern Language” by Christopher Alexander).

Like I said, for the most part I did enjoy the food. But a large part of why I go out to eat is the atmosphere and the experience, which I felt was extremely lacking (especially compared to other Lebanese and Middle Eastern restaurants I have been to, which are much better decorated, have a more attentive staff, and are more concerned with presentation). Otherwise I can just stay home and cook the same thing for myself for a lot less money.

I forgot to mention earlier that our waiter wasn’t anything to write home about, either. He seemed to be confused half the time, and my partner and I both had to ask for spoons even though we ordered two soup dishes.

Also I do understand the white china, I have worked in restaurants. However there are many options, even decorative ones, which do not look like cafeteria plates.

  • arthurb301/13 01:02 PM

    I am with you Ben!

  • art01/13 06:52 PM

Yes, Sitti is not an ethnic theme restaurant.  It is also not a cozy place with curtains and dividers.  It is obviously not trying to be any of those things, but something more sophisticated.  There is a place for different kinds of restaurants.  Clearly this is not your type of place, but they are not trying to be that type of place.  I would not go there for a cozy, quiet dinner with colored plates, but if I want a vibrant, urban experience with lots of engergy, I think it is a great choice.

  • cathie02/27 04:01 PM

I’m with Ben. A few of us went today and it was so loud that we couldn’t even speak to each other and it was lunchtime. The food was just okay. The salad I ordered was not what the menu stated. I couldn’t even eat any of it other than the salmon. I was charged full price even after asking for another salad and not getting it. I was charged for a tea and I had water. I can say that I will look up a receipe and make the lentil soup myself, it was good.I will not be returning. Uck!

Aladdin’s Eatery in North Raleigh beats Any lebanese restaurant in town. prices are extremely reasonnable. Staff is unbelievably amazingly nice.

i give them thumbs up. check them out at

  • thomas b03/08 11:56 AM

I have eaten at Sitti over 10 times now and have had no problems at all. Food is fresh and somehow everything I order is exactly as described on the menu- and our service has been really good to fantastic each vist. I’m really happy to have such a great addition to downtown dining. Been to Aladdin’s too. It was Ok as far as chain restaurants go, but Sitti wins my vote overall

  • marie07/08 11:45 AM

I am considering having a private party here in the downstairs area on a Friday night.  Has anyone had any experiences sitting downstairs on a Friday night?  I am concerned about the noise from people walking above.  Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated.  Any one had Sitti host a private party?  How was the experience?
