Solas Applying to Play Music Outside

Tonight the Council hears Solas’ proposal to begin playing amplified music outdoors in three areas of Solas: the Rooftop, the Balcony, and the Patio. This will signal a big change for entertainment on Glenwood South, with outdoor music on patios. Some residents in the area of Glenwood South are not happy about this move, as it could lead to a new level of noise pollution with dance music emanating from the club every night.  If approved Solas would be allowed to play amplified music outdoors between the hours of 1pm and 11pm.  Is this a good thing for Glenwood South?  The hearing is tonight at 7 in the City Council Chamber.

So glad I do not live near that noise.

Given, what I have heard is, an abysmal record for marketing and advertising events, it seems their last resort is to advertise via noise - carnival barker style.  Classy!

Seriously?  You need government’s permission to do that?

Amazing the amount of control we as free people have ceded to government.

When proposed actions have the potential to negatively impact local businesses and residents, “yes” you need permission.  We are not “free” to do whatever we want.

I randomly found this old article recently, which this post reminded me of:

    http://www.indyweek.com/gyrobase/Content?oid=oid:20820

This was before I moved to the area, but I’m curious if an event like 23 Hours might have been easier or harder to pull off these days.

  • Dave11/03 06:12 PM

Phil.  I read the article, and I think that kind of event would be great to have in Raleigh and more than once.  However, this is a totally different situation.  You basically have a club that wants to be able to blast music from 1 pm until 11 pm on any given day of the week.

can we petition for solas to be closed down for hurting Raleigh’s image? one club trying to be trendy in an otherwise laid back area now wanting to be even more of a nuisance with late night noise. i liked when the warehouse district had all of the dance clubs. if that was your scene you could go down there and have a good time. if you avoid that crowd like the plague then you were easily able to not go to that area. now if i want to sit outside at armadillo or elsewhere on a saturday evening i’ll be subjected to crappy dance music. not cool.

    Sounds reasonable.

I just returned from the hearing.  Solas was granted permit for one year.

  • Suzanne11/03 10:56 PM

I like Solas and hanging out on Glenwood, but I don’t like this idea. If I want to hear their music, I’ll go inside and dance.

  • Margo11/04 12:55 AM

If Solas played music worth listening to, I’d be all for it.  That, sadly, hasn’t been the case any of the 3-4 times I went over the past year.

  • kjoy11/09 05:22 PM

Oh God!  I really hope that doesn’t pass.  I have a sneaking suspension that Solas will play horrible music.

Reminds me of going to the mall with the stores playing obnoxious music, WAY too loud i might add.

I go to Rapid Fitness on North st.  I noticed the other night that they were playing music outside - how weird - it’s a gym!  and the music was really loud - uncalled for and annoying in my opinion.
