This fall SparkCon comes together again for its 4th incarnation. The conference is the only thing of its kind in Raleigh- a sort of DIY civic event that is designed to showcase anything in the city that can be called creative in the triangle area. If you don’t know, the conference is the brain child of Gamil design- a design group run by Aly Kahlifa- that also heads up DesignBox several of whom made the Donkey Kong animation. This year SparkCon is taking center stage in Raleigh, right on Fayetteville Street with a large stage at one end and local vendors and street painting running across Hargett - to form a giant cross of creativity through the heart of downtown.
SparkCon started as a conference focused on ideaSpark- the nucleus of the conference where in past years members of the community met together to talk about projects and ideas that can help make the area a better place. This year ideaSpark has morphed into a platform for community ideas.

ideaSPARK Call for Presentations
Deadline: 8/1/09
This year, ideaSPARK is using a concept called Pecha Kucha (pronounced roughly: pe-chak-cha). The term comes from the Japanese word for chit-chat. In other words, a conversation. But think of it as a way to share powerful ideas in a fast-paced, high-energy manner: 20 slides presented for 20 seconds each. That’s 6 minutes and 40 seconds to get your point across.
So, a conversation. Let’s talk. What kind of idea do you have? A community-based business or enterprise? A way to do something better, greener or safer? Or maybe it’s a way to change the world one small spark at a time? If it has anything to do with Independent Business, Technology, Inclusivity, the Arts or something else we haven’t even thought of, we want to hear about it. Send us your idea (in a description of forty words or less) and an image (.jpeg, .pdf, the back of a pizza box, etc.) illustrating what your presentation might look or feel like.

Calling all artists to create temporary site specific installations in the Fayetteville Street area in Downtown Raleigh. We will be designating several outdoor sites for this event. This will be a really great new feature in the SparkCon showcase of regional talent and we’re really excited about this. Selected artists will have the opportunity to reorder and re-imagine established boundaries of experience and create a unique dialogue between space and viewer. This is a short duration installation project, which will require artists to configure the space accordingly. Spaces will be assigned AFTER artists are chosen.
