Students, Late Night Drunks, Enraged at Gumby’s Closing

In what was apparently a surprise, Gumby’s, Hillsborough Street’s budget pizza delivery has been closed after scoring a 60.5 on its most recent inspection.  Gumby’s is best known for 4 dollar pizzas with a grease topping and a side of ranch dressing. Many State graduates fondly remember the searing heartburn of cheap liquor combined with the pizza product.

WRAL brought out the fear mongering 5 on your side with a block of text that sums it all up:

The most serious violation cited by the inspector was food-temperature concerns. The inspector noted a lot of cheese, chicken wings and other food was being left at potentially dangerous temperatures.

    Pizza America Next?

Go to Amore’s for late night Pizza.  Much better!

Wow, this is pretty scary. I’ve only eaten at Pizza America once or twice, but enough times to know that I didn’t trust them to cook my food.

Sylvia’s is also a great slice of pie!

John, Agreed. At least so far as Hillsborough St is concerned.

Of course this would happen.  Gumby’s has been it the hot seat for awhile.  Two of my best friends have worked there.  One just recently quit and got a job at Lily’s.  The management there is sub-par and does not utilize the workforce properly.  People get a job and quit it so fast there, that you want to wonder what’s really going on there.  Gumby’s is an old building, so that also contributed to their shutting down.

If you want some good pizza, Moonlight, Lily’s and I’m sure a few others will cater to your needs.

Or you can make the pizza yourself.  Its super easy and really fun.  The lady and I like to tinker with different combos.  Plus the leftovers don’t give you heartburn or the shits.

Lily’s gets my vote any day, especially for quality organic ingredients

Agree with Barden, I’ve been eating Lily’s leftovers for lunch the past three days.  Definitely has the best pizza and either has the best or worst environment for a pizza joint (depending on the speaker) There’s nothing like hearing the cd player change from Wu Tang to Sepultura in the time that it takes to order a slice.

the only problem with lilys is the service.  thats why i end up at moonlight so often.  you also have to give mellow mushroom credit for a delicious pizza.  and for lazy nights, capital creations delivery all the way.  i like how this has become whats the best pizza thread.

Capital Creations and Lilys all the way- everything at moonlight taste subpar- The crust always comes out wet, soaked from the frozen vegetables they use that defrost in the oven.  I will take Lilly’s service over Moonlights crap ingredients any day.

uh…isn’t it PizzAmerica? (insert sarcastic tone here)

also, are we not forgetting “I (heart) NY Pizza”?....with ‘za by the slice, its the closest thing to the real (simple) thing…...debating about which gourmet pizza is better is a subtlety i seem to lack…all i know is Lily’s is out b/c of the horrendous service, too loud music and bad ‘tude of the delivery beatches…..yes, i’m rapidly becoming an old man….

Lily’s is the best hands down. I don’t know what y’all are talking about concerning bad service. You just order at the counter and then they yell your name and bring it to you. They could slingshot a stromboli at my head from across the room and I would still eat there.

Lilly’s service is as good or better than any other heavy-metal rocker pizza joint.  It’s not meant for you to be waited on.  If you’re not going there for the service, you’re missing the point.  Also, don’t forget WHY you should eat there.

    like is said…me: old man….

i’ll be antisocial and eat Capital Creations at my house….

so what venue qualifies as the most punk rock to patronize?....haha..probably Gumby’s….

lily’s bad service = calling for delivery and being told the driver is running behind, it will be 1.5 hours, so i just go pick it up from the restaurant instead and there’s the delivery guy, hanging out at one of the tables…..the whole time i’m there.

but none of this stops me from going, of course!

I worked at Gumbys in the mid 90s. Food temperature is the least of your worries! big surprise

It was still the tastiest cheap delivery pizza on Hillsborough though.

“Fear mongering”? A restaurant that poses this much of a danger to people’s health SHOULD be shut down and their entire set of employees should be criminally liable for any damages they caused to innocent customers.

Two things to remember: There is hardly such thing as a “24-hour bug” and “the bacteria DON’T CARE”.

  • erin

please don’t tell my bosses there is no such thing as “24-hour bug”

Not so much that this particular issue was “fear mongering” but I find 5 on your Side’s coverage to bring that term to mind.
