Sugarland Making its Way to Raleigh

Sugarland Making its Way to Raleigh

Ask Katrina Ryan if there’s room for another bakery/cupcake shop in Raleigh and you’ll get a quick response. “I don’t know how to say this in a way that sounds horribly arrogant, but there isn’t any good cake in Raleigh – there’s just not.”

For a city that fawns over its homegrown Cupcake Shoppe, boasts three Café Carolina Bakeries, has Crumb making delicious cups of cake and has Gigi’s popping up everywhere…well, those are fightin' words.

But the executive chef and co-owner of Sugarland bakery in Chapel Hill has the icing to back her up. The Indy, Metro Magazine, Our State and N&O have all named Sugarland’s sweets the best in the Triangle. According to Ryan, everyone who works at Sugarland went to culinary school. And the number one source of customers for her wedding cakes? Raleigh.

“We are ready to grow, and picking the right place is important to us,” said Ryan. “We love our shop in Chapel Hill and would not open another one unless we felt the same about a new one.”

Katrina and crew found that spot in Cameron Village, near what was previously Blockbuster Video in the space that used to be Lavender and Lace. Twice the size of their current store on Franklin St., the Raleigh location will feature enough space for private classes, cookie parties, and other events their current space currently cannot afford.

In addition to traditional baked goods, Sugarland is the only bakery in the state with a full bar, a feature the Raleigh store will also boast. Ryan also plans on piloting a brunch offering at the Raleigh store, something the Chapel Hill location doesn’t offer.

“Lord willing and the creek don’t rise, we’ll be opening sometime between Valentine’s Day and April 1,” continued Ryan.

Until then, cupcake lovers throughout Raleigh will have to decide who takes the cake in the cupcake wars.

While I am decently satisfied with Raleigh’s choices in cupcakes and cakes, it will be nice to have someone with Gelato in the area again!

Now if we can just get a good non-dessert bakery for fresh breads, rolls, and such again.  I still miss Big Sky.

I’m with you, Rob. I’d much rather have someone who specialised in bread, etc.

Ryan’s right.  Who do we go to for cake?  Kroger?  Harris Teeter?  Edible Expense, er, I mean Art?

Cupcakes are a trend that will pass.  What else you got to sell is what matters (and what will keep you in business).

The current selection in this community is most certainly following Raleigh’s culinary trend of “overprice and underwhelm.”  Sorry GloSo “Shoppe” buffs, those cupcakes just aren’t great.

We’ll see how it all shakes out.  But my bet is Sugarland does a great business on good ol’ fashioned, big cakes.

PS, Square Rabbit is no slouch.

I agree with RaleighRob and sally—I’d rather this be a bread bakery! But, it’ll still be great to welcome great cakes to Cameron Village.

What does this have to do with country pop music?

Have you tried the coconut cake at Hayes Barton Cafe?  If you put a blonde wig on that cake, I would do unspeakable things to it.

Yes, Big Sky!  They’re definitely missed!  Perhaps there’s another ITB baker listening?  please!

We’ve heard rumors of a bakery coming to the downtown area but still nothing concrete….yet.

For bread and pastries, go to La Farm in Cary.  Its worth the drive.

    1) the Shoppe is not all that, it’s just the best we’ve got (and it is open late for weekend cravings)

    2) La Farm is past its prime, but was once totally worth the drive

    3) Amen to a good bread shop!

    4) I miss having a decent French bakery OTB (oh horrors, not OTB!)

I agree with WillNCSU, LaFarm is good for bread and pastries if you’re nearby.  Definitely not worth the drive though.

Great Harvest on Lead Mine is decent too, just a bit far North.

Almadina Bakery on Method makes great pita & has a huge assortment of Mediterranean pastries. Not cupcakes & bread, but great if you want to grab a small sweet treat that isn’t loaded down with gobs of icing.

I think she is right, she sounds horrible and arrogant with that first sentence.  Not exactly a way to welcome yourself to a new town.  I really like the current selection in Raleigh as I live downtown and eat out all the time, the desserts in our local shops are treating me right! May have to pass on this place.

While actually agreeing with Katrina Ryan, Steve is insulted on Raleigh’s behalf and will stand against all comers in Raleigh’s defense. To this end, he will continue eating his constant desserts out elsewhere.

Katrina Ryan has quite a history.  She was upset at having been annexed into Carrboro years ago, so before the annexation went through, she got an apartment inside the Carrboro city limits to run for office.  She didn’t win, but she was quite negative.  She wanted lower taxes and a Costco in Carrboro, because it would bring in as much tax revenue as “about 70 small businesses”. She also said that the Carrboro revolving loan fund shouldn’t be supporting bars and pet stores (OCSC and Phydeaux are some of the most successful loan recipients).  She’s a piece of work, and I’m not surprised she’d dump on other Raleigh bakeries.  I wouldn’t go into one of her places if you paid me.

Have some respect for your competition, WOW.
Marketing usually follows the four P’s rule- product, placement, price and packaging. I do not know her but she seems to follows her own P’s - Pompous,Persnickety, pretenious and of Poor judgement

First gourmet fried chicken, then $9 burgers, now a dessert/bar.  I think I’ll stay home and have a salad.

Joe would refuse any money to enter the establishment (it’s just not going to happen, OK, ‘cause of history!), brian confuses marketing with personal opinion and misspells one of the longer “P”‘s, and smitty will…perhaps be joining Steve for dessert after a salad?

I really don’t like the blending of Chapel hill and Raleigh stores. I Like getting out of Raleigh once in awhile to go to places like SugarLand in Chapel hill. It’s a nice change of scenery to go for a walk down Franklin st. Those stores make that place unique and a cool Sat afternoon trip. Raleigh needs its own places. Time-Out chicken was a great place to visit once in awhile after a show at the Cat’s Cradle. But it’s tanking on Hillsborough st. Guglhupf’s, Dame’s Chicken & Waffles and the Kokyu BBQ truck are great reasons to take a trip to Durham. Raleigh needs a place like Amelies french bakery in Charlotte. Plus you can get Gellato over across fron North Hills.

Raleigh is the corporate home of Golden Corral.  Maybe they should come up with a downtown location that serves beer.  At least they have a salad bar.

So what? Did Mohamed Ali say ” Well, George Foreman is a pretty good boxer. ” No. He said” I am the greatest!”

Sounds to me like Ryan is just a good interview, and Khaner wrote up her most provocative quote, which is good writing.

If the Indy, the N&O, and Our State all rate her stuff the best, she’s obviously no slouch.  I hear Bobby Flay is kind of jerk, but he still makes a heck of a chile relleno.

...either that or she just hasn’t been to Hayes Barton….
