Taste of India Closed for Weather or Closed for Good?

Taste of India Closed for Weather or Closed for Good?

Taste of India opened quietly back in August of 2009 on Salisbury Street in Downtown Raleigh. It seems that it has possibly closed just as quietly in the past week.

Over the past six months, Taste of India has built a decent following through word of mouth in Downtown Raleigh. Their free delivery was an excellent service, the food was great and the prices were very reasonable. We asked the employees a few times about their business and it was always the same answers, “it’s getting better” and “Monday buffet is great”. Delivery seemed to pick up each week according to their driver but night time traffic seemed very slow inside the restaurant.

Last weekend, during the snow storm, Taste of India put up a sign stating that they were closed due to the weather and would be open again on Monday. It has been over a week now and the doors of the restaurant are still closed. New Raleigh has tried to contact Taste of India multiple times over the past week for our Tikka Masala fix and answers to the closed doors without any luck.

Let’s hope it’s just a short break but considering the track record of this space, we don’t have much hope that Taste of India will be opening again anytime soon. Both restaurants that have occupied this space before Taste of India have closed in similar style, with a note saying they would open again soon. Neither ever returned to serving food.

Yup. I’ve tweeted about the closings last week and this week. What’s annoying is that the $5.99 buffet was PACKED in the weeks prior. Very very sad. The delivery was wonderful, too. I just don’t know how with such a bare bones operation, great word of mouth, wonderful product, and low overhead, this seemed to not ever make it out of the gate.

I’m still holding out a little hope, but only a little. This isn’t good. :(

A neighbor shared this with me:

“They were subleasing, and the person who had the lease lost it, and the building owner wouldn’t renew with the leaser or Taste of India.”

The restaurant had recently become quite popular with downtown citizens. I have to say that the word of mouth for Taste of India was better than any restaurant I’d ever seen, frankly, and I can vouch that it lived up to its reputation. Some savvy landlord should seek these guys out!

Oh man. Boo to the building owner! Who is it? I want to write them a strongly worded letter!

I’m sure it was slow there at nights, as their sign plainly states they are only open during the day.

Your food is wonderful.  Hold on until Spring - or with the smallest bit of marketing it will happen sooner.

Do the monday buffet every day and I’d eat there at least once a week.

Well shoot!  A little advertising never hurt any business.

Sign on the door today (2/22) says open. Here’s hoping they’re back in business.
