Taste of India Coming to Downtown

Taste of India Coming to Downtown

Little is known about the coming restaurant but all signs point towards Taste of India coming to the former Baba Ganouj spot on Salisbury upstairs between Subwary and Niro’s Gyros. New Raleigh’s calls to the restaurants numbers were not answered but it seems Taste of India will be open for lunch only Mon-Fri 11am-3pm. This is very similar to how Baba Ganouj ran and it changed ownership a couple of times before folding all together. Let’s hope Taste of India sticks around because it’s a great upstairs hidden spot for a restaurant.

Gotta love the “Coming Soon Shortly” sign.

I was so excited when I saw this, but those hours do nothing for me as someone who lives downtown but works elsewhere. What a fake out!

Great news, but the hours suck.  Its a start though I guess!

I just don’t understand how one can cover rent when not being open after 3pm, or on weekends for that matter.

Closes at 3pm?  It’s like they want to fail before they even open.

Those hours are awful! They’re going to have to do better than that to stay alive down there.  Would be nice to see them open late night.

I wonder if they’ll keep changing their name like Baba Ganouj/Abu Ganoug always kept doing.

I’ve been lamenting for years downtown doesn’t have an Indian restaurant.  And when we get one, all it is, is just a lunch buffet??  Crap!
Are people in the restaurant business these days just trying to fail??

having worked downtown, you would really be amazed at the high volume traffic that is generated at lunch time…a lot of the “fast food” quick restaurants are open only during lunch…if i could walk to the hidden quiznos across from moore square parking deck when i get home from work at 5:30…that would be awesome…but, nope…can’t…cuz they are closed…working in cary and living downtown sucks!

I think most people realize how much lunch business there is (ie: all the people who WORK downtown and don’t live there), but your last part alone is what makes me think restaurants should always strive to be open evening and weekend side, too. I imagine residents are a lot more loyal with their spending than professionals who work here.

It is easy to complain about places not being open for that 1 night you want to eat out, but these restaurants have to pay bills, employees and most can barely afford to do that now in downtown.  Realistically, most people eat at home and go out downtown maybe only 1 or 2 nights a week.  And most of those people probably go to the same restaurant regularly.  FYI - A lot of restaurants lose money most nights of the week, unless they get slammed.  Especially the ones that have high labor costs.  I suggest everyone start eating out more at the restaurants that are open on nights and weekends in downtown to the point that the other restaurants can not stand to lose that business.  Otherwise, walk around and check out all the restaurants that are open at night during the week and only have a few people in them.

dj has got it right.  It is very difficult for a restaurant to turn a profit at night in downtown Raleigh, especially if it is not a bar/restaurant hybrid like RT, BB, Saucer, Pit, et al.  Make it ethnic food (most people do not eat Indian weekly), and it is even more difficult.

The reality is that there are a LOT more dining dollars to be had during lunch at this point in time, as least as far as downtown in concerned.  If Taste of India does well during lunch hours, I would imagine that they would look into serving dinner as well.

There’s always a middle ground: open for dinner Friday and Saturday.  There’s a few places that do that.

My good friend from India says to never eat Indian food for lunch, “The spices get into your blood and make you lazy.”  I think he’s right, but that hasn’t stopped me.  I’ve also heard that curry is slightly addictive.

I second that Indian Curry is addictive. I’ve fallen off that wagon so many times…

I love Indian food and worked in Mumbai and New Delhi enjoying both cuisines. Downtown definitely needs a good Indian restaurant. These hours are indicative of a strip mall buffet. Sorry. But I do look forward to a lunch there soon!

It rocked today for lunch.  $6.99 buffet was awesome.  They are open for dinner also but no buffet at dinner.  Only open 4 days with current management and got in and out quick.  Very tasty - not too hot. - Stowy

FYI - It is open.  I just went there today, March 2010… - Stowy
