The Bowerbirds flutter on Pitchfork

Looks like The Bowerbirds have become a staple in the News Section of the online music magazine Pitchfork.  The latest musing on the site announces The Bowerbirds fall tour with The Mountain Goats and John Vanderslice.  The attention seems flattering for the birds and Raleigh’s music scene, except for the beginning and ending statements that PItchfork writer Paul Thompson throws in as an attempt at what in my best guess is his “southern humor”.

The article starts with the line “North Carolina, come on and raise up!“ and ends “Taking your shirt off and spinning it like a helicopter is, as always, optional.“

Not sure what to think about this, but in any case, you can check out The Bowerbirds this Friday at Lump Gallery with Phon, for a benefit concert, money going towards “future exhibitions and projects that they organize around the country.

That’s not a failed attempt at Southern humor, that’s a righteous nod to Greenville, NC’s own Petey Pablo.

I thought the respectable Mr Pablo called East-Downtown-Raleigh his home?

Oh, I know it was a reference to Petey Pablo’s t-shirt swinging song, hence my comment that it was a failed attempt at southern humor.  It was almost as if that was the last song to ever make it big out of North Carolina and Thompson thought it would be humorous to add it to an article about another band from North Carolina that has nothing in common with Petey other than their home state.  To me it was more of a unrighteous slap than a righteous nod.  The Bowerbirds are much better than Petey Pablo references…..

This is awesome. I really like John Vanderslice. I like the Mountain Goats too, but I knew they were signed up for the tour- but Vanderslice is a big surprise to me! WAY TO GO BOWERBIRDS! and if you haven’t heard their Hymns for a Dark Horse yet, get on it!

I’m giving Pitchfork a pass because I can’t think of another hit anthem with North Carolina in the chorus except for James Taylor and he’s a little too general (Is he including SC?).  Alright Bowerbirds, NC needs a new hit anthem and the onus is on you.

Petey Pablo references and the like just goes to show the caliber of that “online music rag” and all should be wary of the fork that pitches.
