First Friday Map and Guide to the Art Exhibitions >
With beautiful weather and a nice spread of shows, it should be a great First Friday with lots of people out and about. Be on the lookout for teams competing in the Second Annual First Friday Scavenger Hunt put on by Downtown Raleigh Alliance and NCMA Contemporaries. In fact, you can still form a team and enter this afternoon between 5-6.
If you’re off to a really early start, check out Southern Vernacular at Miriam Block Gallery. The gallery closes at 5:15, but you have until May 18th to catch this show during regular business hours of the Upchurch Government Complex. If you still have not seen the monumental Thomas Sayre show at the Gregg Museum, it will be open through May 10th and the gallery will be open until 8 tonight.
The Fish Market will feature art by graduating seniors from the College of Design in Fin. Across the street at Morning Times Gallery, members of the upcoming Bain Project are hosting a preview. Most of the show is focused on process with only a few finished pieces, but is an interesting glimpse into the forthcoming exhibit. Christopher Coleman, an Assistant Professor at the University of Denver, is exhibiting The State of Separation at Lump.
Design Box hosts promotional posters by Jeff Williford in Dinosaurs, Monsters & Posters. Additionally, there will be several unique bus benches at Design Box, designed and built by members of the Young Architects Forum for Have A Seat NC. The benches will installed at bus stops that have high ridership but have not been provided with benches.
Lee Hansley Gallery has the biannual Art I Have Loved: The Triangle’s Art Exchange. The show features a range of artists, from historic international figures like Marc Chagall and Salvador Dali, to late great regional artists such as Joe Cox and George Bireline who both taught in the early days of the NCSU School of Design.
Catch live music by Starmount at Rebus Works tonight for the opening of Epic Battle, an exploration of the battles with and within nature by Casey Porn and David Eichenberger. These two artists are both members of Bonded Llama, who have a special open house on Sunday to cap off an art-filled weekend.
