This First Friday features some exciting new venues. Flanders has completed the renovations to their new galley and relocated from Seaboard to the corner of West Street and West Martin Street. Their show, What’s the Matter, features New York artist Bill Sullivan. His mastery of mixed media is evident in the large manipulated photographs and photorealist paintings on display. Lee Hansley Gallery has the annual One Hundred Under 1000 exhibition ongoing but has expanded his gallery operation for the holiday season with a second location at 126 Glenwood Ave. This auxiliary gallery, Lee Hansley Gallery, Too, has an eclectic mix of talent represented in North Carolina Art: Then & Now. Carrie and George Le Chevallier recently hit the ground running with their new space, THE LoDi PROJECT, at 1126 North Blount Street. In a unique approach, “a graffiti artist from the streets of Philly, a cartoonist born and bred in the South, and a French Puerto Rican mixed media/collage painter” have collaborated on 4 canvases and 15 drawings for 3 The Hard Way. The forthcoming Raleigh Institute of Contemporary Art has an event in City Market to showcase art by their gifted roster of instructors and offer pre-registration for their inaugural courses beginning in late January. This friday is also a great opportunity to visit the newest additions to Fayetteville Street, The Collectors Gallery and The Mahler are both hosting a holiday open house.

It’s business as usual with some of downtown’s staple destinations. Rebus Works presents its annual Via Penland exhibit. Sylvie Rosenthal and Raleigh’s Evan Lightner are the featured artists, both working meticulously as contemporary woodworkers. Additionally, over twenty Penland-affiliated artists working across all mediums will have their artwork in stock. DesignBox presents its eighth annual Brand Fandango show. This show has become a regular destination for seasonal shoppers in search of that special unique gift. Accompanying the diverse collection of area artists and artisans is the grand opening of Shotbox, which will feature coffee drinks and deserts by Crumb.

Fish Market Student Gallery celebrates its senior talent with Rooted: Art & Design Senior Show, which will present work in “fibers art, 2-D and 3-D animation, photography, fashion design, multimedia stuff, sculptural lighting, installation art, and awesomeness.”

Stop by Lump this month too, especially since they will be taking the month of January off. Their latest exhibit, Bad Dreams Starring Good Friends, showcases Daniel Davidson of New York City and Josh Rickards from Philadelphia.

Be sure to check out other First Friday offerings listed on our guide.
