A final first Friday for 2007 and this months theme is commerce.  But really, is there a better gift than good art?

Morning Times Shaun Richards- This Raleigh favorite is making quite a name for himself in this town.  Previously selected as artist in residence at Artspace - his studio has recently relocated from Art Space to the back of 311 Martin Street.  This month the Morning Times will be exhibiting Richards’ work.  The paintings are a rich mixture of naturalistic representation, collage and mixed media in earth tones- the result offers a rich treat informed by our post modern digital world.  Stop by tonight to meet the artist at the Morning Times in its pleasant gallery space overlooking Hargett Street.

Rebus Works continues their series of top notch shows this month-  offering some interesting 3D work by two talented young women.  Vessels by Meredith Brickell and complimentary sculptural “bathing suits”  by Kristen Martincic in a show called “When I go Swimming.”  See the exhibition page for information about both.

The Fish Market has an interesting offering of Street Art and Art and Design projects tonight.  The graffiti scene has heated up in recent years due in large part to artists commited to hip-hop culture.  The basement gallery is always worth a stop and its right across the street from Shaun Richards, so you don’t have much excuse.

As for the Commerce Theme:  Design Box will present Brand Fandango IV info and time here..  Stitch is hosting some local fashionistas- info and time here (including our favorite Denim God Victor Litvyenko). And finally, not first friday related- but Art none-the-less Lee Hansley is holding his annual show - 100 under 1000 - with affordable art works perfect for giving, stopping by this weekend would not be a mistake.

See our Exhibition Guide for more shows and info on the ones above.

The Shaun Richards stuff is pretty rad.  The person in the white veil/curtain thing in the photo at the top of this article is Kelly Crisp of The Rosebuds. My favorite piece is at the top of the stairs, “Aquarius”.  I like the warm and dark atmosphere it projects.

I also enjoyed the graffiti show at the Fish Market.  The piece dedicated to the bar-bathroom was awesome.  It definitely was a different interpretation of “traditional” graffiti.

I stopped by the Vicki daSilva show at Flanders311 on Friday.  I SWORE those large format prints were backlit. Yet they were simply C-prints mounted on aluminum panels. Holy luminescence, batman!  Like George Rousse, daSilva uses the camera to capture something otherwise lost in regular ol’ space-time.  Where Rousse revealed his trompe l’oeil geometries set within space, daSilva records time-lapse landscapes and spaces that emerge from tracking fluorescent strips…...pretty cool stuff.

I was absolutely awed by the Saun Richards show. I stared at each piece for a few minutes, and returned to some to examine them more. The day after the show I kept thinking about the similarities and differences between the painting shown above and Christina’s World by Andrew Wyeth…I do believe that would be a beautiful essay. I’ve actually thought about Richards’ piece every day since Friday. It is amazing in person.

This show is definitely worth checking out.
