An end of summer visual feast this month. With group shows galore- Raleigh will be lit up with new imagery. This month there aren’t many new shows, with Flanders in transition and many shows from last month being carried over, but the choices that are available are just smashing. New work and visiting artists from the west coast, oh my!
The Conquerors at ArtSpace will feature a powerful group of young, Nationally recognized artists exhibiting in Raleigh for the first time: Mark Bodnar, Mari Inukai, Liz McGrath, Bill McRight, and Bonnie Brenda Scott. Organized by Paul Fredrich - the show adds a big dose of modern imagery to this Friday’s lineup.
These artists are recognized as dynamic leaders of the Lowbrow painting style from the pages of Juxtopoz and Hi Fructose magazines.
Originating in California in the early 1980’s and currently moving towards the East Coast, Lowbrow is a rapidly spreading underground art movement that combines traditional painting subject matter with modern ingredients of underground comics, hot-rod culture, and punk rock. The Conquerors reflects current trends in the Lowbrow genre from the East and West Coasts.
Artspace will also feature Megan Sullivan and Susan Martin in separate shows for these rising Raleigh Artists.
Blam! features some of Raleigh’s most active women artists who have been working together at the new Blam Studios at the Morning Times Gallery. Lee Moore, Sarah Blackmon, Phoebe Briley, Jen Coon, and Stacy Kirby.
Lee Hansley will host the formal opening for a memorial retrospective for Anne Hill- a deceased Raleigh artist whose mixed media patterning and imagery references craft in forming modern imagery.
Lump brings Triangle Artist Jerstin Crosby with rich patterning and primitive figures.
Designbox will host video game inspired art- local artists recruited by artists Adam Capps, Chris Norris and Paul Friedrich.
Paul Fredrich’s newest Onion-Head Monsters will aslo be featured at Colony Theater all month.
Adam Cave and Rebus works will also be hosting the same shows as last months. If you haven’t seen the Rebus Works Ceramics show- it is stunning and well worth the visit.
To close your night Blacklisted will be bumping at Five Star and DJ Sputnik will be all over it with the Dystopian Disco Dance Party at the Jack Pot. See you around town.
Be sure to check out other First Friday offerings listed on our guide.

I’m a little confused as to why there is no mention of The Beehive Studio at Father and Son here? It’s just as much as part of First Friday as any other venue. Here’s a link to tonight’s event details:
We didn’t have that information, it wasn’t sent do us. We always welcome emails letting us know what you are doing for first Friday. .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) Thanks Kyle.
Thanks, Kyle. I’ll pass that onto the Magner’s who book the shows!
Definitely check out Lump if you’re in the area. Stop by Metro Lounge and see Victor Knight’s work and the designbox 2 Bit show- Sean Kernick has a very nice piece for it. Hate I leave right after work for out of town and have to miss all these great shows.
