First Friday Map and Guide to the Art Exhibitions >
A fresh first friday, with art, concerts and much more- but we will just keep the agenda to art this month- as there is so much new stuff. First off, Luke Buchanan follows up last night’s opening at Rebus for his new paintings, with new drawings opening at Stitch. Buchanan’s work represents a huge change for the artist, as we cataloged in yesterday’s profile, and it is very much priced to move.
The Morning Times will host Tracy Spencer’s return to Raleigh, along with long-time cohort Emmy Lewis, the two will be showing work under the show titled Bloom. Spencer says “this is my girliest work yet” and that’s saying something, as the new-wave feminist is big on women and their roles of power, sexuality, etc. We can only guess from the miniscule invitation image that by girlie- the artist means light, airy, and feminine in the pre-feminism sense of the word.
Ant Farm has two exciting shows- the first are new works from Sarah Powers. The committed artist has recently been elevating her profile with a series of public exhibitions. We expect its all building towards her October show, but this may be the last time to get her work at the bargain prices we have seen.

Lump will have artist Lydia Moyer, a UVA professor who totally looks to be kicking ass with new media prints that are dimensional, strong and familiar. We will be sure to catch it tonight, with Lump’s limited hours, this is our best chance.
Artspace will host a video exhibition from Yuxtapango- the curatorial brains behind the video work (not interactive) that has been on Hargett St. The show is entitled HIGHLIFE and from the video teaser- it looks to be great hipster fun:
Yuxtapongo Presents “HIGHLIFE”
Flander’s opens a new show: Geometric Constructs, a group show of constructivist and cubist paintings heavy on pattern and form.
Also, at ArtSpace, Julie Niskanen will be showing her nature focused mezzotints. Niskanen’s work is scientific and tightly rendered. Niskanen is also the curator of this months show at 311 West Martin Street Galleries- a show of international mezzotint artists.
At the Mahler, Water Matters: Paintings and Works on Paper by Marty Baird from Marty Baird. A water centric show, we are really excited to see Baird’s latest. She will be speaking at 6 at the Mahler.

a friggin shame lulu painted over the equipment sign
lulu painted over the equipment sign because it was required by the city of raleigh per their sign and zoning ordiances.
lulu fought tooth and nail just to keep the tractor on the roof - the city wanted them to take it down.
My only real issue with the sign repaint is the shade of blue that was chosen to mask the original sign lettering. Would rather see it black to highlight the orange tractor better.
wouldn’t disagree with you dpk!
the orange isn’t the original color of the tractor either - and then i later realized that those shades of orange and blue are lulu’s corporate logo colors.
