First Friday Map and Guide to the Art Exhibitions >
As usual, there is a lot to do on the agenda, so lets hope the rain holds off for First Friday. There are more than few shows that have not changed since last month, thus there are some second chances. If you’re off to a really early start check out Southern Vernacular at Miriam Block Gallery. The gallery closes at 5:15, but you have until May 18th to catch this show during regular business hours of the Upchurch Government Complex. Rebus Works still has hometown favorites Casey Porn and David Eichenberger, both members of Bonded Llama, featured in the exhibit Epic Battle, which is an exploration of the battles with and within nature. If you still have not seen the monumental Thomas Sayre show at the Gregg Museum, it will be open through May 10th and the gallery will be open until 8 tonight. Seriously, make time to see it before it comes down and be sure to see the new exhibit at the Gregg, Silver of the Stars.
Everyone should make an effort to stop in Raleigh’s newest fine art gallery, The Mahler, located on Fayetteville St. The inaugural exhibit features photographs by singer-songwriter Tift Merritt, who is performing tonight at Fletcher Opera Theater. Flanders has an opening for DXR ’09: DESIGNING CHANGE from 7-10pm. The exhibit is a design expo and runs through May 9th. Flanders 311 hosts three emerging artists, Brian Chang, Derek Toomes, and Lauren, in The Electric Mayhem. The Fish Market has a show called SCALE, which features student work that individually interprets the notion of scale. John Gall is back by popular demand at Adam Cave Fine Art and Lump features video and sculpture by Brooklyn-based artist Cammi Climaco.
Looking past First Friday, the Carolina Designer Craftsmen host their first Artwalk in Five Points on Saturday featuring high craft from across the state alongside local artists. On Sunday, The Handmaidens, a NC design and craft collective, will have their 7th semiannual installment of The Handmade Market at Marbles Kids Museum.
