This month we asked the downtown art brain Tracy Spencer to do our First Friday coverage. Here is her run down of the best of what Raleigh has to offer, remember to use our Raleigh First Friday Map and Guide to figure out what you want to see- we have pictures and extended descriptions. If you are an artist or gallery that would like to be featured please email with information about the show and any images you might have. Thanks!

Lots of good things to see this month! Seriously- Fall is the best time of year for Raleigh art, and September is looking like a great kickoff.
Things not to miss:
Artspace: Ann Marie Kennedy’s installation in the front gallery, Forms of Shelter, enjoys its last opening of the summer. She’s constructed two small houses within the gallery, as well as exhibited several drawings. Very interactive, very worth seeing, Her work is really ethereal and southern, evocative of our rural heritage.
Lump: This month Lump showcases the kinetic sculpture of CoD professor Dana Raymond - Mechatronic Symphony. Dana’s large scale wooden pieces are always inviting and clever, but this time he is introducing electronic motors. Worth the two block walk.
Morning Times: Meredith Professor Janet Link exhibits her still life drawings. Introspective and solemn, Janet’s simple compositions and objects are executed with exquisite detail.
Visual Art Exchange: The Never Exhibited Works (N.E.W.) show represents a cross section of work from across the state. In it’s 18th year, this show has a great legacy and is worth checking out.
Flanders: (18 Seaboard) Between Worlds: Recent work by Amy Funderburk. This show looks phenomenal, if just from the card image. The new kid on the block, Flanders is proving to be an incredible gallery. Let’s support it.
Rebus Works: Pat Fitzgerald’s People I Think I Know - painterly computer manipulated prints offer visions of friends and family in the form of strangers going about their lives, captured in Pat’s quick gestural hand.
Fish Market: absolutely no clue what they’re planning for their first opening of the school year… but it is bound to be good. Miles and crew have done great things so far.
DesignBox: sneak preview of SparkCon, creative conference coming up September 21 - 23. Images and footage from last year, plus early registration.
FM: (Glenwood South) Adam Peele’s colorful screenprints and art blocks are on display in Raleigh’s new epicenter of cool. Go for the art, stay for the eye candy.
Collector’s Gallery: CoD Professor Charles Joyner shows new work inspired by recent trips to Ghana. His many-layered screenprints evoke both traditional West African art and the contemporary African American experience. Charles has been a champion of art in the Triangle. This should definitely be on your agenda.
