Help Save the Jackpot (Green) House

Ian Dunn, over at Goodnight Raleigh! has an extensive piece of writing about the Fabius Briggs House, or Green House/Jackpot House, its crumbling state and probable fate of demolition. Take a read and if you feel the need to help out, send an email over to Preservation NC and let them know what you’d like to do to help save the house. You can email Elizabeth Sappenfield (Preservation NC / National Trust for Historic Preservation) here.

The future looks bleak for the Briggs House.  Recently condemned by the city of Raleigh, its days are numbered — unless it is either brought up to code, or moved.  Preservation North Carolina (PNC) is working to save it; however it seems the only way to preserve the house is to move it.  This option would require a tremendous amount of effort and money.  The gleaming question is whether it is worth all the trouble.  History buffs and architecture geeks would certainly chime in with a resounding “yes”, but sadly the majority of people would remain apathetic to its destruction.

hopefully they can restore the house itself but the commericial portion/jackpot needs a bulldozer to visit it quickly.

As a structural engineer that has spent a fair amount of time inspecting this house several years back, this structure is in an advanced state of decomposition.  Years of no interior climate control, rainwater entry and lack of pest control have taken their toll.  The commercial CMU addition to the front (The Jackpot) forever altered the original front elevation of this house, and I doubt that could ever be restored.  Besides, other than some nice woodwork in the stairway, the building is cheap and ugly.  The roof has failed.  The windows (what windows are left) are very decomposed and ill-fitting.  The siding is cheap ugly composite.  The neighbors are an IHop, a apartment/retail building, and the Jackpot.  It is also located on a very busy corner.  There is no way the building could be moved in its current state.  For the cost of reinforcing the house and moving it you could build three new houses just like it.

Jackpot is a fun bar, but that building is in a terrible state.  Let’s hope the fate of the house doesn’t determine the fate of Jackpot.

I had a studio (briefly) at the green house and it was awful. I love old buildings, but there is nothing redeemable about that house. I doubt you could even find any salvageable lumber in that rotten old place. Tear it down.
