Raleigh has a new coalition of creative young women, now turning their talents toward fundraising for important local causes. The Beehive Collective was conceived by a small group of women who were involved in two very successful performances of The Vagina Monologues, which raised $2,500 for local women’s nonprofits, while providing us with thought-provoking entertainment.
The group has decided to expand their reach beyond women’s issues to engage the larger community. Membership is not limited to women or young people, but is open to all energetic people willing to pool money, as well as time and talent, to benefit nonprofits and charities. The Collective’s mission is “to pollinate community giving in Raleigh and inspire young women to lead.”
The group’s founders will determine the focus of the first project, while members, or bees, will collectively determine the focus for subsequent projects. The Beehive’s Queen Bees generally have a background in volunteering and include local environmental activists, such as Heather Yandow of the N.C. Conservation Network and Billie Karrel of Toxic Free N.C. The 2008 focus issue will be unveiled at the kick-off event on May 1.
