BBQ pride is one thing Raleigh and NC have no shortage of.  Below check out USA Today’s Joshua Hatch’s two part series on NC’s BBQ culture. The whole process from BBQ chefs, BBQ joints, BBQ sauces and the BBQ smoking process. I am hungry just watching the video.

I like that Pete Jones’ Skylight Inn was the first stop - like it should be.

B’s BBQ is pretty amazing.  During the week they are typically sold out of Q by noon.  People start lining up between 10:30 and 11:00 AM.

I few years back Greenville wanted to widen the road that B’s is on, taking away most their land.  B’s threatened to shut-down…the road project got scrapped.

Eastern BBQ is the best….in Raleigh Cooper’s BBQ is number #1.

It’s a misconception that Lexington bbq is about the sauce, it’s all about the meat.  They’ll bring you extra sauce if you want.

Really, the only difference is Lexington uses just the shoulder (which is best), they make red slaw (which is better, mayo should never touch my Q).

oh yeah, my vote, Lexington is best.  (I don’t even call it western, it all comes from lexington, in one way or another)

I hope I don’t offend anyone.  Lexington bbq blows.

On a serious note.  I don’t think you can begin to look at NC BBQ heritage without first having a look at church bbq sales and pig pickens.  Church BBQs served as the genesis for many great BBQ restaurants.

As long as the church’s actually cook their Q and don’t just get one of those semi’s to back up and serve stuff cooked yesterday.

I happen to really *like* LexBBQ, but it’s just not my absolute favorite.  It doesn’t seem to have that **POW!** flavor of smoke and porky goodness that others do.

Put it this way—if I am driving within 20 miles of LexBBQ, I’ll make a special detour to get some.  At the same time, it’s not going to be the REASON for my trip like some other joints have become.  I love it, but I’m not steppin’ over my Mama to get some.

MMI, just out of curiosity, what places do you like better?

(and by Lexington BBQ, we are talking about the restaurant with that name, and not just any place in that town?)

Didn’t we already do this?  wink

Anyway, Allen & Son is my favorite, and perhaps the sole establishment that can make me embark on a 40 minute drive for the sole purpose of giving them my money.

Yep…I meant the actual establishment of LexBBQ (a.k.a. “Honey Monk’s”) vs. the area’s restaurants as a whole.  Actually, there are some people who swear by Monk’s local competitor’s.  I hate to say it, but I have yet to sample their wares.  I’ll fix that if I can ever find myself in Lexington and actually bypass Monk’s.

Oh, and like you, I do not consider LexBBQ as being a true representation of “Western NC style.”  It’s more of a hybrid, and I mean that in a good way.

All of this Lexington “BBQ” is such a waste of time. We all know - regardless if we can admit it or not - that eastern NC BBQ is the only ‘cue that matters.

Silly rabbit.  I like it best, but how can you know for sure if you don’t try it other ways for comparison?

All this talk about NC BBQ is making me miss Texas BBQ even more… smoked brisket, turkey, sausages served sauce-free with bread, onions, and pickles. If you like sauce, add it, if not, get to eatin’.
Pork fans, bite your tongue for this one: Can anyone suggest any places in Raleigh for smoked brisket? I’ve been to Coopers, but didn’t notice if they had brisket on the menu at the time. In the meantime, I guess I’ll try to give pork ‘que another shot. grin

I believe that Danny’s BBQ serves brisket.  Maybe The Barbecue Joint in Chapel Hill does, as well.

The Pit actually has some pretty tasty brisket, not that I’m an expert on good brisket.

like tc said, the pit serves it and it’s good… for nc.
