Hopscotch is keeping us busy this weekend, from after dinner until the wee hours of the morning. But what to do in the off time? Drag your fun-beaten, hungover body through the one-way streets of downtown in search of some local flavor.
SHOPPING
In between Hopscotch venues you’ll find several shops unique not only to Raleigh, but to the country. Check out Stitch for signature designs by Holly Aiken. These styles may parade around Raleigh like miniature city flags on the hips of downtowners, but beyond the Triangle you’ll be the only one with a bag like this.
Also hailing from N.C. State's College of Design, Raleigh Denim's Sarah and Victor Lytvinenko opened The Curatory in 2010. In addition to selling individually handcrafted jeans sewn in the heart of downtown Raleigh, The Curatory collects well-made clothing and accessories from their friends all over. It’s a feast for any pair of eyes with attention to detail.
Still got some time to kill? Head to Father and Son, a labyrinthine attic of vintage clothes and furnishings which no one in recorded history has escaped in under an hour.
BRUNCH
Dos Taquitos Centro promises a “crisp, light, and clean” Saturday brunch—personally endorsed by Raleigh’s celebrity chef Ashley Christensen. As for Sunday, check out Christensen’s own Poole’s or other local classics like the Capital Club and Humble Pie.
COFFEE
Need to check into the office? We’d normally recommend Morning Times for its central location and excellent baristas. But during Hopscotch it promises to have lines out the door. So if you’re looking for a quiet table in addition to your morning pick-me-up, head to Helios on Glenwood South for reliable internet connection and easy parking. It’s less than a mile from Hopscotch’s major venues and offers some breathing room away from the hustle. Another alternative to the Times is the newly opened Beasley’s Chicken and Honey on the corner of Martin and Wilmington Streets or Wilmoore Cafe on Wilmington St.
BEER & LIQUOR
There are many bars downtown, but a few spots really celebrate obscure craft beers. Busy Bee Cafe on Wilmington Street is one of them. With rooftop seating, a rare cask and many aged sours always on draught there are few places in the world that have a selection like this bar. For other options check out Foundation- a basement bar with craft cocktails- on Fayetteville street.
BEER/TOOTHPASTE/RAIN JACKETS
If you forgot to pack rain gear, take the R line to Cameron Village’s Great Outdoor Provision Co. Then again you could always turn a garbage bag into a poncho or simply let yourself soak while standing in line. It’s all part of the festival experience, right?
Finally, sometime during the weekend you will find yourself heading to a B.Y.O.B. after-party, suddenly taking up smoking, or wanting to freshen your breath before attempting to make out with your house host’s nephew. Taz’s Supermarket One on Wilmington Street promises to meet every miscellaneous need that ought to be met. Unless their beer selection isn’t micro enough for you, in which case head to the newly opened Tasty Beverage Co. on W. Davie St. in the Depot Building.
Finally, good luck this weekend! We’ll see you there.

Hopscotch Music Festival Guides
Stop by the Kung Fu Pop-Up Store and SHOPscotch in City Market. Daily door prizes including rare Merge Records vinyl, a turntable and other great stuff.
Got a bunch of new stuff out at Father and Son, stop on by.
My own recommendations:
Brunch: On Sundays you just cannot beat Jibarra, Tir na Nog (with its Bloody Mary bar) or Capital Club 16
Drinks: Isaac Hunter’s Tavern is seriously the most underrated bar downtown. They have an amazing selection of N.C. craft brews. And the Landmark is (IMHO) the most fun place with the friendliest bartenders.
Coffee: Benelux has great coffee, and good sandwiches and pastries.
For coffee, City Market and Benelux would probably be the best escape.
Right on, Ken! Benelux is a great place do down a quick espresso when you need a pick me up between sets (and beers).
For shopping I love Epona and Oak at City Market. Totally friendly staff, neat local products and decent prices.
I understand that there’s no re-entry for City Plaza shows. Is food available inside the gate? I want to catch the entire Dodos set tomorrow but don’t want to eat dinner at 5:00 if I can avoid it.
gamila shop on martin st has lots of cool design stuff as well as work by local artists for sale- right down the block from raleigh denim. and brewmaster’s on the corner of martin and dawson has a ton of beers on tap, lots from nc, and a brand new menu that includes biscuit sandwiches and looks pretty tasty.
Andrew,
I saw Bon Iver there this summer and there was limited food available inside. The Pit was there serving barbeque sandwhiches and I remember Lumpy’s serving ice cream. After that I don’t remember what else was available. I didn’t get anything but I would bet it is expensive. Bottles of water at that show were $4.00 ea.
Andrew - I don’t remember if there were any food vendors inside the gate, but I know you can go to the restaurants that are within the gated area - La Volta, Jimmy John’s, etc.
Thanks for the info sara and C.
take the R Line to Cameron Village? how?
City Plaza is not the same as Raleigh amphitheater where the Bon Iver show was. There are restaurants to eat at in City Plaza.
Yeah I just realized I read that wrong. Andrew - disregard my comment.
R-Line doesn’t go to Cam Vill. Take the 12 or the 16 CAT bus.
Cmon by DesignBox - next door to Raleigh Denim. Great local design and gifts. Feature for September is Raleigh-bred pop artist, David Rose!! 323 W Martin St. www.DesignBox.us
Don’t be afraid of The Morning Times. While Benelux, Helios, and Wilmoore Cafe are all GREAT options, please don’t count us out! We’ve staffed extra people this weekend to to ensure that you get your delicious food and beverages in a timely manner…and we’re open until 10pm, which might be helpful if you’re downtown after dark and in need of a boost.
