More than $3,000 is expected to flow to the Literacy Council of Wake County’s WILL Initiative in February. The donors will come in the form of a collection of locally-based women performing Eve Ensler’s famous play, The Vagina Monologues.
On February 9, 2008, the Rialto Theatre in the Five Points neighborhood and The Pour House in Downtown Raleigh will host the now-annual community production of the monologues, a heartwarming, inspirational, funny, and challenging show that benefits local charities that work to eliminate violence against women. The Rialto show will start at 1:00pm and The Pour House show at 9:00pm.
The shows are a part of this year’s Raleigh V-Day 2008 Community Campaign and this year’s charity recipient, the Literacy Council of Wake County, is a Raleigh-based non-profit focused on teaching adults how to read and write better through the use of volunteer, one-on-one tutors. The organization, realizing the importance of literacy for all, founded the WILL Initiative (Women Improving Lives through Literacy) two years ago at the NC Correctional Institute for Women. This program is designed to improve the lives of female inmates through literacy instruction.
V-Day is a global movement to end violence against women and girls that raises funds and awareness through benefit productions of Playwright/Founder Eve Ensler’s award winning play The Vagina Monologues.
The Rialto Theatre is located at 1620 Glenwood Ave. in Raleigh and The Pour House is in Downtown Raleigh at 224 S. Blount St. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased online at http://www.raleigh-vm.org.
Chapel Hill’s Max Indian, a retro rock band, will follow the evening performance at The Pour House.
