Olde Raleigh

This Month in Raleigh History

A few dates in January history…

Jan.1, 1833 - The first railroad in the state is completed in Raleigh; horsedrawn cars haul granite quarried nearby to the site of the Capitol. The experimental railroad is credited with saving the city after the fire that destroyed the Capitol almost caused people to give up on the city and move away.

Jan.4, 1869 - The State School for the Negro Blind is opened.

Jan.5, 1792 - General Assembly of 1791-92 votes to carry out the 1788 ordinance (which stated the the new capitol needed to be within 10 miles of Isaac Hunter’s Tavern).

Jan.13, 1868 - The Normal School and Collegiate Institute (now known as St. Augustine’s) opened.

Jan.24, 1901 - Olivia Raney Library opens to the public.

Jan.29, 1849 - The establishment of Dix Hill, State Hospital for the Insane, was authorized by the General Assembly.
