Farmers markets are opening, woo hoo! I love spring time.
Moore Square Farmers Market re-opens on April 15th - delightful. For those who haven’t checked it out yet, it’s Wednesdays from 10:30 to 2 - a perfect lunch break diversion for people who are downtown at that hour. They feature only produce from within 90 miles of Raleigh, and put an emphasis on organic and sustainable growers. There’s also meats, breads, cheeses, ice-cream and other locally-produced yummy things. In the past, they’ve had live music and chef demos during the market. This year, they’re also planning something called a “Green Plate Special,” where local restaurants will feature menu items purchased from the Moore Square market. Should be lovely!

In other Raleigh farmers market news, the North Hills Farmers Market re-opens on Saturday, April 19th. That is open 8 am to noon on Saturdays, and takes place in the “North Hills Commons,” which I think just means the little faux sidewalk and lawn inside the shopping center. Odd, perhaps, but that’s my bias against shopping malls showing through - I’ve never been up to that market, but hear they also have a great selection of locally-grown and organic stuff.
And of course, there’s our big State Farmers Market, which has been there rocking and rolling all along. See Mark’s great article on that from last year. Little if anything is organic at that market, but much is locally grown (though not all, weirdly - ask the person you’re buying from to be sure!).
