TMH is opening up yet another modernist residence to the public. The Thompson Residence, designed by David Davenport, is currently on the market for a cool $1,950,000. The 6,328 square foot home was featured in Metro Magazine shortly after it’s completion in 2001, and is the latest of Raleigh’s extensive collection of modernist residences hitting the market in the wake of the recession.

Triangle Modernist Houses is a 501C3 non-profit aimed at documenting, and preserving architecturally significant Modernist residences in triangle. See previous recaps and photos of the McCowan Residence tour here, and the 2008 Mini-tour here.

Tickets are $5.95 and additional information is available here.

$2M to live south of Garner?  Sounds like a crap deal to me.

I always thought it was odd that these modernist houses are out in the middle of nowhere.  I would be much more impressed w/ a smaller scale version of this incorporated somewhere in the city.

You could make the same argument for any style of house, couldn’t you?

There are tons of cool modernist houses near downtown (just look on TMH’s website”), but some people like to live with “land, lots of land”....should they not get to have modern houses?

As the owner of a modern house, I guess I never thought of the style as specifically urban, or rural or anything…...just a style.

I’m not knocking the house or the style.  I’m a big fan of both.  I don’t think there’s anything particularly urban about modernist houses, I just think there’s something unappealing about living so far away from the city.  That’s absolutely a personal preference, and it’s entirely unrelated to the design style here.

I understand that modern is a style of design and does not have anything to do with urban vs rural.  For me, personally, it isn’t very modern to live in a 6000 sq foot house in the country.

Well whaddya know… you learn something new every day. I didn’t even know there WAS a Raleigh between Garner and Apex!

Listen, darlings. When you get into the world of two million dollar homes complete with private go-kart racetrack, you have other homes.

I like to call this style of furnishing one’s home ‘Frazier/Country’.

Though I am not sure, I would suspect the Thompsons have a beautiful pied a terre in one of the lovelier sections of Raleigh.

Unfortunately, whether it’s a result of Architects doing a poor job in educating the public, or contractors doing a poor job at building efficiently, most folks think that ‘Modern’ is by default out of their price range.

When these are among the few examples the public sees, how are we to believe Modern is for everyone?

I am sorry, but this home does not represent the modernist landscape of the Triangle.  It is too big and frivolously designed. Maybe it would fit the Hampton’s Modernist Houses better.
