We announced back in August that a new sweet spot would be opening in the Warehouse District. The wait for Videri Chocolate Factory is almost over and the shop will open next week.
On Wednesday, the folks from Videri announced that they will be opening their doors in the HIstoric Depot Building on Davie Street on Thursday, December 15th. Finally, the Depot Building is not only full, but full of various tenants (and not just bars/clubs), something we've desired for years.

Warehouse District Depot Building Videri Chocolate Factory
So, is craft chocolate the new cupcake? I’m certainly not complaining! My fingers are crossed that 2012 is the year of the salumeria. Raleigh needs more cured meats!

Slugworth!
They do realize that “videri” is the part of our state motto that we are (supposedly) proud to avoid?

I’m going to open a chocolate shop right next door called “Esse,” just so people can speak Latin when choosing which shop to patronize.
“Let’s grab some chocolate!”
“where should we go?”
“Esse quam videri, for sure.”
I’m glad to see this. I’m a little puzzled by the name. They do realize that “videri” is the part of our state motto that we are (supposedly) proud to avoid? Some explanation is warranted.
What if someone else opened a chocolate shop right next door called “Esse”?

I’m glad to see this opening.

Hey everybody,
It’s us at Videri! We are really excited for everyone to come see our factory and taste our chocolate on Thursday.
When choosing our name, we wanted something that tied us to North Carolina and explained what we are doing. The word Videri on it’s own means “to be seen” and that is reflected in our factory.
You can walk through our factory, smell the delicious aromas of dark chocolate and see how everything is made, from the bean to the bar. Can’t wait to see y’all!
Stopped by today after lunch they were very unwelcoming. :(
unwelcoming? sam, scotty and starr are some of the nicest, most welcoming people I’ve ever met!

sorry for the multiple posts… there was an error with the server
Unwelcoming? I love these guys.
“Videri” doesn’t mean “to be seen”. It’s literal translation is ” to seem to be”
So, you can see the chocolate, but you can’t buy the chocolate? That’s not much fun.
We stopped by last weekend and they were super nice folks. They were sold out of most of their super dark stuff, but we bought a bar of the Sea Salt Milk/Dark chocolate. Packaging is cool, and the chocolate is great. We will be back on thursday for some xmas/gift shopping.
Hopefully they start to offer some tours, and potentially add some hot chocolate, coffee drinks etc. in the shop to add to the atmosphere!
^^^that wasn’t the real hackles10…. we have an imposter!
I can’t imagine them being any better - or nicer - than Escazu!
They will never be Escazu, no matter how hard they try, they are imposters at best.
Try as they might, they will never be as good as Escazu. They are imposters at best.
We had a group for lunch and stopped in once we saw the word chocolate! They had free (and delicious!) samples ready and were happy to tell us all about the business!
The chocolate was underwhelming unfortunately. It wasn’t bad, but we were very shocked at the price. VERY high (8 bucks for 3 oz of chocolate?) considering the size and taste we received. Escazu’s bars and bites are more reasonably priced, but even then I would pay more for Escazu’s product. Videri’s product (Specifically the pink peppercorn bar) was lack luster in the chocolate department. It tasted one note and a bit flat.
That being said, the space they work in and aesthetic are amazing. The branding is beautiful. In my dreams this clean and modern look would have Escazu’s chocolate inside, with their prices as well.
