Looking though old Raleigh postcards is a great way to get an idea of how things used to look before the days of color photography. Here are a few favorites from back in the day.

Fayetteville Street Olde Raleigh
Love these! Any chance RCM will reprint some of them?
RALEIGH looked way more classy then than it does now damn!
Too bad most of those buildings were torn down to make way for progress!!
Cool - we have one of the Capital building in the Big Boss Tap room… here is a scan of it:

7th one down is Meredith College before they remodeled
Yosup, that is Meredith but they moved to the current location and the main building became the hotel (pic 8) and at some point, they took the porches off, white-washed it, and it became a state government building, and then it was torn down. The spot is one of the big parking lots fronting Edenton St between Person and Blount. The only thing remaining are some brick posts that similarly match an apartment bldg across Edenton St. which I think used to be a dorm. You can see the last incarnation of this great building courtesy of Raleigh Boy at goodnightraleigh—- http://goodnightraleigh.com/2009/01/raleighs-own-castle/# —- Most would now agree that it’s a great loss that it was torn down but I guess in the ‘60s that architectural style was out of fashion. I think in the coming years we are going to look back at the Garland Jones Bldg in a similar light.
Very, very cool. I love stuff like this
These are very cool. Thanks.
I think you can still buy half of these at the drug store across from Krispy Kreme on Person
And we still keep tearing good buildings down.
Taking down old rundown building is better than keeping them.. We have almost no use for 2-4 story building in downtown Raleigh. Everything should be 10floors or more. Better use of the space. Taller building with more in each offers more space for other stuff. Wish we had a larger park, or a better place to put the amphitheater.
