Wake County Democratic Party Endorses Nancy McFarlane

The Wake County Democratic Party endorsed Mayor Pro-Tempore Nancy McFarlane who is running for the Raleigh mayoral seat.  McFarlane is registered unaffiliated, which makes it particularly notable.  The endorsement came after a vote of the County Executive Board Monday night.

“Nancy McFarlane has served with distinction on the City Council,” said Mack Paul, Wake County Democratic Chairman.  “She is well positioned, by virtue of her business experience and civic leadership in Raleigh, to carry on Charles Meeker’s legacy of reasoned, forward thinking leadership.  The Wake GOP may disagree given their recent attacks but Mayor Meeker’s leadership has been instrumental in driving Raleigh’s growth, the revitalization of downtown and more.”

Other endorsements include:

Raleigh City Council (At-Large):  Mary-Ann Baldwin
Raleigh City Council (At-Large):  Russ Stephenson
Raleigh City Council A:  Randy Stagner
Raleigh City Council D:  Thomas Crowder
Raleigh City Council C:  Eugene Weeks

Wake County School Board District 3:  Kevin Hill
Wake County School Board District 4:  Keith Sutton
Wake County School Board District 5:  Jim Martin
Wake County School Board District 6:  Christine Kushner
Wake County School Board District 8:  Susan Evans

When was the last time Raleigh had a woman as mayor?

I’m pretty sure there has only been one woman mayor in Raleigh, the legendary Isabella Cannon.

    From her wikipedia entry:
Isabella Walton Cannon (May 12, 1904 - February 13, 2002) was the first female mayor of a capital city in the United States. At the age of 73, she defeated the incumbent Mayor of Raleigh, Jyles Coggins, during the election of 1977. Known as “the little old lady in tennis shoes,” she served one term as mayor of Raleigh until 1979. Isabella Cannon died at the age of 97 on February 13, 2002.

I usually vote Democratic but screw Thomas Crowder.  Someone more progressive (not anti-food trucks, anti-students, anti-cultural growth, etc) needs to run against that guy.
