Waraji Downtown Location Padlocked By Wake County

It has almost been a year since we announced that Waraji was opening a second store in downtown Raleigh. Construction in the space hasn’t gone very far since and recently a note and a padlock appeared on their front door.

The note (image below) states that the “doors have been padlocked by order of the Wake County Sheriff’s Office - To gain entrance, see landlord”. From this, an assumption can be made that there are problems between the company and the owner of the space that Waraji was slowly starting to upfit. It could be back rent that the tenant owes the landlord and therefore the doors have been locked so the tenant can’t work on the space until it is all settled through the county.

Let’s hope things get settled soon. Since Cuba and Est Est Est left this location, this corner has been begging for activity. Until then, Sono and Wild Ginger will hold down the downtown sushi fort.

probably need to pay some TAXES! The sherrif doesn’t ususally get involved unless it is a tax situa-tiiiii-on.

Nope.  That’s the sign that gets posted when a tenant is evicted.  It doesn’t mean that it’s a permanent situation—just that the tenant and landlord have to sort out their issues before the eviction can be rescinded.

Waraji, and it’s superior product, is one of the few things that Fred Benton and I agree on. Have been going there for over 10 years. Massa and Kaz are great guys, and I am sure that it is not a problem of available funds/owed taxes. These guys know how to run a business.

You know, it’s weird, but my experience at Waraji a little over a week ago was somewhat less than I’m accustomed to from them.  It wasn’t one particular thing, but things seemed to have slipped from an “A” to a “B+.”  Fortunately, my friend enjoyed herself—I guess I am just spoiled by my previous visits.

It may have had something to do with the fact that Massa was not there that evening—he does usually keeps things up to his standards.  this night, however, even the tea was a bit off.  I know that something as trivial as the tea not being brewed as strong as is normal isn’t a big thing, but it was one of the discrete things I could actually put my finger on as being “off” about the evening.
